What's up with the beans?
A few years ago I was inspired by some local street art here in San Francisco. It was simple and happy which is the kind of art I like, so I started painting happy little "human beans" as I called them. Then the weirdest thing happened. Like, creepy weird. I was at a cafe writing in my journal about Acne.org. This is back when the web site was completely simple and I thought it needed a little something to spruce it up. I couldn't decide if my human beans were the way to go. They seemed kinda silly, but at the same time they made me happy. So I left the cafe unsure about what to do. For some reason that day I decided to take a new route on my walk home. I was walking along looking down when I saw written in black letters on the sidewalk in all caps "HUMAN BEANS". That's it. Nothing else. No explanation. No context.
I actually walked by at first because it seemed normal. After all, I had just been thinking about human beans, so why wouldn't it say that on the sidewalk? But when I realized what I had just seen, I stopped in my tracks, went back a few steps to where it was written and just stared down at it. "HUMAN BEANS". It was one of the most random and coincidental things I have ever encountered. To this day I have no idea why someone wrote that on the sidewalk or what human beans meant to them. But when I got home I immediately got online and started drawing some beans and uploading them to Acne.org.
The beans lasted for only a few months on Acne.org but I still like to draw them and paint them. Recently a couple of people suggested I bring them back, so I figured why not. What harm can a human bean do? ;-)
