sebumsucks - I am currently 19 years of age and I also recently decided to give vitamin d3 a shot because in the summer my skin would be extremely clear. Now Im not saying it wouldnt be greasy but thats because I would be outside sweating all day at work. But I would not have any acne on my face or my back really. When winter swings around and I get caught up in school, I dont spend much time outside. I also suffer from really greasy skin on my face and back and have tried everything but acutane. I really hope this works for me because I dont want to have my acne or an irritated back.

So I gave it a try with no results. Started taking 5000 ui's a day, and then brought it up to 10,000 ui's after 2 weeks. It's been about a month and a week so far, and absolutely no change at all. I hope it works for some people.

I also take a zinc pill, sports multivitamin, and 2000 mg's of Vitamin C daily.

People, you need vitamin D whether you notice it improving your acne or not. And get it from the sun when you can.

I was very deficient in vitamin D and getting my levels back to normal never did anything for my skin....

I'm taking a supplement right now that has Vitamin D in it, working well, but maybe I will try supplementing with extra vitamin D like your saying.. Anyone out there had any bad reactions from taking too much vitamin D??

You can overdose from taking too much vitamin D.

This is true I went to my doctor he tested me for low vitamin d he told me my vitamin d was extremely low and he prescribed me vitamin D 50,000 mg once a week plus a vitamin d and calcium supplement daily I started taking it but never thought my acne was cause by low d. After about a week I noticed that I didnt had a single pimple I usually get cystic acne very bad but I thought it was because a new cream I was using but then I ran out of my prescription and forgot to get my refill my face got worst than before , thanks for this post tomorrow I am running to get my refill smile.png

Too much vitamin D can cause liver toxicity. Don't overdo it. Build up your levels gradually.

Anyone tried vegan D3 supplements? That might be my only option besides D2 :/

You can overdose from taking too much vitamin D.

How much Vitamin D would you have to take to overdose?

It depends on what your levels are right now. My levels were extremely low and so I got some vitamin D from my doctor. That brought my levels up to normal and I continued to take 1000 iu every day. Eventually when my doctor checked my vitamin D levels again they were too high so I had to cut back on my maintenance dose.

Hey WishClean,

Do you still suffer from oily skin?

No I don't actually. But I don't think it's the vitamin D that helped with oil...I was taking D2 which is not as effective as D3. Inositol is what helped with oily skin and oily scalp.

Did your doctor give you D2 or D3? I think D2 can't help with acne... Also, D2 and D3 levels are measured separately and then a combined result is calcuulated. It's possible to have high D2 and low D3 or the opposite, but still be within the "normal"/ high range.

Has anyone experienced any problems with taking vitamin d3? I've been reading the great things about d3 and acne so I had my levels checked and I am low. I decided to start out conservatively at 1000IU per day but after a few weeks noticed that I was actually getting more cystic acne, indigestion and an odd taste in my mouth. At this point I decided to stop and a week later my acne has improved slightly, the taste in my mouth is gone and so is the indigestion.

I am obviously not overdosing and I don't think the oil in the capsules could have gone rancid because I have followed the storage instructions and the expiry date isn't until April 2015. The bottle doesn't actually tell me what the oil in the capsules is so maybe I am having a reaction to the oil rather than the D itself?

Any advice from someone who has experienced similar would be greatly appreciated as I am really confused.

Yes, I'm one of the few here whose skin got worse on vitamin D3. Not sure if there's supposed to be an initial breakout phase, but probably not. I discovered I either can't digest the oil in the supplement, or the yeast, or -- most likely -- the lanolin. Non-vegan D3 supplements are derived from lanolin, and some people can be allergic to it. When I took D2 I didn't have any issues, but D3 is the type that helps skin, not D2 based on my experience.

Try to find a dry vegan D3. I found a country life vegan D3 but haven't started taking it yet because I'm trying out some other things at the moment.

I'm gonna jump on board with this. In the past, I've always had some success with taking semi large amounts of vitamin A, but never enough to keep with it. So I went to the store yesterday and bought 5,000 IU caps of D3 and 10,000 IU caps of A. I'm going to take about 15,000 IU of D and 30,000 IU of A a day. I'll keep everyone posted with any possible results (or lack thereof).

jayboy take care for the dose you are going to take, I think people who have the vitamin d3 deficiency take a 200 000 UI each 6 months, not more.

A month later:

I've been taking 4,000 IU of D3 daily, but I also changed a whole lot of other things:

  • stopped using Tazorac (which made my skin insanely greasy, making me look sweaty--like I'd just spent half an hour on a treadmill. Stopping Taz cut lots of the grease right off the bat)
  • got back on Dan's regimen, following it to a T
  • Other supplements: 60 mg of zinc picolinate daily, 500 mg Magnesium daily, popping a handful of baby carrots for the vitamin A, sporadic Niacinamide pills (planning to ramp these up, though)

Results: definitely less grease (back to pre-Tazorac levels), acne is a little bit better, but cysts are still inviting themselves to the party on my face. So, it's impossible to gauge whether D3 supplements have been doing anything, because of all the above. I panicked, and being scientific about testing D3 went out the window. Good luck to the others here, though, haha.

Also, I took a vitamin D blood test about three weeks into the 4k IU, and my results were 40 for D3, and <4 for D2. D3 seems okay already, the low end of the normal range. Not sure if the three weeks of D3 brought it up to that, or that's what it's always been. Shrug.

So far so good for me, tomorrow will be my 5th day on Vitamin A & D. Since I've always had some success with A, it's hard to tell if it's both or just the A that's helping, but either way I'm happy. No new major breakouts, just small whiteheads from bad diet and a vitamin E moisturizer that I use on my face sometimes (this definitely clogs my pores). If you haven't had any sucess with vitamin D, I'd definitely give A a try.

Hey, this is really interesting. I've had a hideous breakout recently, and been put on lymecycline and Duac, which has seen some improvement. However during the base blood tests I gave on starting Duac, I found out I have a Vit D deficiency think my level was 35 so I started on 3200IU D3 each day. I had previously been taking D2 but stopped.

It's only been 2 weeks since I started the supplements, so not enough time to tell really. It seems to be quite a bit better but I don't know if that's the antibiotics which I have been taking for around 6 weeks now kicking in. I'm certainly not clear but the acne on my jawline has gone. This post have given me hope. Will let you know how I get on in the coming weeks.
