I've had luck with zinc in the afternoon and magnesium in the evening. It's reduced the acne about 50%, but I'm starting my D3 regimen tomorrow. I'm planning on only taking a pill on days where it's cloudy/I plan to stay out of the sun. Don't want to overdo it, even though it may be hard to OD.

All,

In addition to its role in immune system including protective substances in skin, vitamin D is also important in normal glucose metabolism, it controls the release of melatonin and thus hyper pigmentation, it regulates the pituitary release of growth hormone. Allows minerals to absorb properly and metabolize in the body. Regulates normal cell proliferation, including skin cells. Additionally, vitamin D assists in the buildup of healthy tissue such as your bones.

D3 was a no-go for me; I had better effects sitting in the sun for 15 minutes than taking pills. My solution was the quality of the water I was cleaning my face and body with. Tested the water and it failed.

As an update to my post a few months back. I was deficient in vitamin D, and took 6,000 IU a day for 3-4 months. Now my vitamin D levels are too high ('almost toxic') and my skin is no better.

(By the way - be warned, if you take high levels of vitamin D for too long, you will get overcalcification of the bones, heart and kidneys, which can lead to kidney stones and kidney failure.)

I came accross this topic last week and I have a very oily face. It's been bothering me lately how shiny my face is. I tried vitamin B3 from other posts recommending it. tried moisturizers and face wash with lemon grass. Tried prescription Retinol with the highest level 9. I also tried OC eight, mattifying ge. Anyway, none of it made any difference on my oiliness.

I figured a bottle of vitamin of D3 doesn't cost much and it won't hurt trying. After 6 days taking 10,000IU, my face had almost no oil. It had a natural skin. At least 80% of my face shine and oiliness was gone. I don't know if this will continue to work. I notice how much different my face look. I was contemplating getting on Accutane. If it stays this way, I'll be very happy. Thanks for the post. I know this won't work for everybody, but it's working for me.

I hope you realize you'll OD if you keep this up. That amount is to only be taken for extremely deficient people for maybe a week. Since you probably didn't get tested, you have no idea if that is the case. If it helps with oil that much, go in the sun for 20 minutes without sunscreen daily and you'll make the same amount of D without worrying about OD'ing (pun).

I am in Australia and recently got random Blood test as I generally get done after I go to India on a holiday trip. I found my D3 level was really low- 9.3 and was prescribed Calcirol 60,000 IU by my doctor once weekly. To my utter surprise just after 2 dosages, all my skin cleared & even became smoother. I would like to point out that I had Acne problem since last 20 years and had range of antibiotic treatments & was put on Accutane at one point of time. D3 supplements came to me as blessing in disguise & it's doing wonders to my skin, making me even look better. I think it greatly reduces the sebum production and which is a contributing factor to acne. As some one also pointed out this- "to how much sebum your skin produces is your vitamin D levels; it's believed the oil is used in an attempt to "ready" your skin (it gets complicated, this is the best way to think about it) to absorb more vitamin D from the sun. And so when your body has a surplus of vitamin D your skin produces less sebum in response."

I believe the theory is true & I am sure Vitamin D in future be reliable cure to acne & we would not be requiring over the counter pricey medicines, good luck !!

I'll have to read through this whole thread, but I got my bloodwork back today. D 1,25 (OH)2 total value is 31.

I don't see the sun unless I must, for fear of photoaging, and I use sunscreen even if I'm sitting by a window. (I love my milky white skin tone!) I have been waiting on an order of 5,000 IU D oral spray. Will this be too much?

I was taking 400 IU's daily in my women's multi/prenatal, now taking 667 in my ADEK chewable. The second link says to multiply that DVA x 7 and take that, but that's what I was taking if the half- life is 7-14 days. Am I just not absorbing the supplement due to liver deficiency ( an element of my my TCM diagnosis) or 20 yrs of oral antibiotics screwing up my digestion? How likely am I to get vitaminosis on 667/ day and 5,000 extra per week?

http://www.nleducation.co.uk/resources/reviews/so-how-much-vitamin-d-do-i-need/

Interesting note on that link about sun exposure: "expose your body to direct sunlight without sunscreen but only when your shadow is shorter than your height" (7 months out of the year.) Direct sunlight = not for me!

Hey there guys, I've been taking vitamin d3 (dry form, daily dosage of 2000 IU) for about a week now, and all I've experienced so far are new breakouts located around the mouth and chin areas (where I seldom break out usually). I've heard so many success stories about vitamin d3 that I thought I would give it a try, but it seems to have negative effects on my skin. I can't expose my skin to the sun because it turns red and irritated (I have hypersensitive and oily skin). Did any of you guys experience a "initial breakout" while on vitamin d3 pills during the first week or did your acne clear up right away? I'm thinking I should discontinue my intake of vitamin d3 if it still gives me new breakouts by the end of week 2. Also, my acne is not genetic (nobody in my family or even extended family has had or has acne) nor is it hormonal (I've had my testosterone and estrogen levels checked three times last year). I don't know what's causing my acne which I've had for 9 years since age 10. I thought I would outgrow it, but people keep telling me I won't, so I'm losing hope. Thank you for your replies, I appreciate

i didnt experience an "initial breakout", but i also didnt experience any change in my skin from taking vitamin d3.. so its not working for everyone.

its like alot of things where u hear about only the success stories, but u dont know for what % of the people who tried this it worked.

Great news, SebumSucks. I'm glad that you've managed to get rid of your acne.
How is your acne (if you still have any) doing now? Did you get rid of it completely? Also, I'm very interested to hear if you've had any specific diet before you discovered the power of D3? Are you going (and have you went all that time) with sweets, diary, grains and all that stuff triggering off the inflammation? Thanks a lot.

I recently took Vitamin D3 for around 2 months, I think I took around 1500 IU per day, and zero change. Not working for me, sadly.

I had cystic acne for 13 years that got worse as I was ovulating every month. It appeared to be hormonal acne. Then one day I read about vitamin D3 and a week after taking it my acne was gone. I take 7000 IU per day. I am a 120lb female. The more I take the drier my skin is which is what stop my acne from happening. The first two weeks that I took it, my skin started peeling a lot. I loved it. The peeling made my hyperpigmentation go away faster and if there was a small bump, it would peel right off, rather than growing into a big infected cyst. If I take 8000 IU its too much because my eyelids and eyeballs start to dry out. At one point I took 10 000 IU for a few days and my eyes got extremely dry and puffy. If I take 5000 it still works, but I get small bumps here and there. If I miss my Vitamin D pills for half a day I begin to break out again. Ive been taking it for about a month now. I ovulated without breaking out for the first time in my life. I also don't have uncontrollably greasy hair like I used to. I can wash it every 2 days now, where before I had to wash it 1-2 time per day and it looked horrible before washes.

Thanks SebumSucks, for recommending this. I tried 20mg Accutane for three weeks and had horrible side effects so I stopped. Of course after a few weeks my greasy skin returned. I started doing more Accutane research when I stumbled upon this thread. For some reason it clicked for me and I tried it. Now I'm cured.

Where did you pull this fact from? You would have to take more than 10 000 IU per day for three months to see an overdose. Some studies suggest you would have to take as much as 40 000 IU per day for months before an overdose occurs. You can find this info on the Vitamin D council website. Please don't spread misinformation.

I don't know if anyone knows this information, but I just got tired of reading post after post.

So I'm going to write down what I know.

Firstly: DO NOT megadose in VIT D 3 unless you are taking VIT K2 (mk7) type.

For every 10,000 iu's I take 200mcg of VIT K2

Keeps calcium out of your soft tissues and heart, and redirects it to where it should be in the bones.

apparently SUPER K from iHerb is very good as it contains vit k1, vit k2 (mk4) (mk7)

2ND: MAGNESIUM - VIT D3 Depletes magnesium stores, it uses up your magnesium to covert it into its active form.

Only use citrate or Chelated Magnesium as they absorb better. I also take 6 a day for 10,000 iu's of Vit d3.

Also taking zinc and iron (I'm low in iron)

Boron is also another co factor of VitD. (But I don't bother too much with that atm)

So there you have it peoples, all these minerals work in harmony with each other. You must take them together for optimal results!

I see some complain that they didn't get results they were after maybe this is why?

Don't forget the 25 hydroxy-vitamin d blood test (25 OH vitamin d)

Make sure it is this test because there are two types of tests.

I didn't use vit D to treat acne. Actually I took it to treat my sinus/hayfever/insomnia problems and as I side effect I noticed my skin is less oily. White heads gone dramatically smooth skin, and I don't get any breakouts during ovulation period.

It took about 1 month into the therapy that I saw those benefits, plus my sinusitis disappeared I sleep better still got a little hayfever but a lot more bearable.

I did a lot, I mean a LOT of research! Which is why I stumbled upon this feed. It really intrigued me to read what people has to say!

I realised no one knows this valuable information. I see someone wrote they take 10,000iu's of VitD on its own. That's just asking for heart and artery calcification and kidney stones!

Vit k2 (mk7) and Magnesium are also a must must when on high dose D3

D3 depletes magnesium and after a while, one will experience what I call magnesium deficiency symptoms (some may think it a D3 toxicity) it's not!

Symptoms includes fatigue, confusion, nausea and muscle cramps, ringing in the ears just to name a few.

K2 is to help redirect calcium into the bones.

I'll write down what I take:

D3 - 10,000

K2 - 200mcg

Magnesium Chelate 500mg (bioavailability 100mg) 6 of that.

Bioavailability is the amount that your body actually absorbs

Zinc sulfate - 100mg

Vit C - 2000mg

It seems to be working for me in reducing oily skin. I started taking 5000 a day (two 1000ui per meal, one for dinner). Vitamin D3, Nature's Way.

It really seems to work in reducing oilyness, otherwise it's a coincidence that since I started my face is no longer oily. I used to wake up with very oily skin, but not any more.

I still get black heads on the nose, and some pimples close to my mouth that I suspect are hormonal but I'm not sure. But my face is overall much clearer and less oily. It's not a miracle cure, but it can't be bad since here we get little sunlight for a good part of the year.

So I recommend to anyone to try it out at least two weeks. I'd say you'll see oilyness reduction in maybe four or five days at most.

I miraculously cleared up last year for about a month, and my skin got so clear that my pores were even no longer visible. I was taking a few things at the time, but in hindsight, I attributed it to taking about 10,000 IU of VITAMIN D and around 180mcg of K2 everyday. The acne came back when I stopped taking everything. I tried going back on VIT D and K2 over this last summer, and not only did my skin not improve, but I started having a lot of problems getting deep sleep. I'd wake up at 5 in the morning and not be able to get back to bed. I thought that maybe I had used up a lot of magnesium from all the D and developed a deficiency. I tried taking different magnesium supplements, but all of them gave me stomach aches, bloating, diarrhea, and weirdly enough, I'd sometimes go days without being able to go #2. I stopped taking everything and haven't tried again since. I think if I can figure out a way to up my magnesium levels, the k2 and d might do the job(if they were indeed the reason my skin cleared up) again. I'm going to try eating a lot of magnesium-rich foods every day and taking epsom salt foot baths and see if I can raise them without oral supplements.

Tran, it would be interesting to see if anyone else would get your results if they took the same supplements as you. Could you give us a rundown of what brands you're taking of all of those vitamins and minerals?

Hello again everyone,

I live in australia not sure if you can get these.

I will write down everything I take. (I'm basically deficient in everything) which is why I got so sick.

-Healthy care Australia vitamin D3 1000iu

-Natures own Magnesium Chelate 500mg

-Natures own vitamin C 500mg

-Blackmores Bio Zinc complex

-Natures own Mega B complex

-Healthy care Australia wild krill oil 1000mg

-Life extension Super K from iHerb.com

-Swisse Inner Balance 100 Billion probiotics

I also juice 2-3 times a week where I use a combination of diff fruit and vege's. Drink it straight away because you don't want the nutrients to oxidise.

Bidgood:

I suggest you try taking a B complex for a few weeks first before starting magnesium, because apparently B6 can help your body absorb more magnesium. The amount of B6 in your body determines the amount of magnesium to be absorbed. So the more B6 the better I think. I only take one a day though.

Maybe that might help with the #2 issue? I also find that by breaking up my dose of magnesium helps too, like one in the morning and then another mid morning, another midday and so on.

So much better than taking it all in one hit. They all went exploding out the other end (sorry)

Stick to magnesium chelate. Less laxative effect than any other form of magnesium. Epsom baths are a good idea. Magnesium is also a hormone regulator! And yes your sleep problems is a sign of magnesium deficiency.

I'm loving it at the moment. My smooth skin. No enlarged pores. White heads that Roaccutane failed to destroy have now started to surface by itself. I just flick it off with my nail! :)

It's spring/summer now in Australia, and I'd used to dread the summer months. I would whinge to my friends that they can probably fry an egg on my face with the amount of oil it produces. Now my makeup stays the same all day with no blotting papers or touch ups needed.

I forgot: you can try magnesium rich foods but you are going to have to eat an awful lot!!!

Modern farming techniques has the soil stripped off its nutrients, so you won't get as much magnesium as you would like.

You can't get much MGSM from water either. through many water filtering processes. Just thought I'd let you know

I recently read an article in the science issue of World Books Encyclopedia that Vitamin D can help with a ton of different things - even with cancer. But it said if you are over weight you have a much harder time absorbing if from sunlight and even from supplements so get a blood test see where you levels are, than get the Docs suggestion on how much to take.
