Benefits of Jojoba Oil

Ever since I discovered jojoba oil, I've been in love with it and I thought I would give it a shout out :)

Jojoba "oil" is not actually an oil, it is a plant wax ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jojoba_oil ). The molecular structure of jojoba oil is similar to that of human sebum, thus it penetrates human skin easily without being greasy. It "tricks" the skin into thinking it has made enough sebum so often your skin will stop producing as much oil.

Jojoba oil is nontoxic, non-comedogenic, and hypoallergenic. Nearly everyone can use it (but I would test it on a patch of your skin for a few days first before using all over, just to be safe, you never know). Jojoba molecules are smaller than human pores so they gently moisturize and push out any cloggage or help slough it off. Thus, doing a gentle jojoba oil massage on your face will not only help cleanse your pores but also make them soft and smooth.

Because jojoba molecules are tiny, they could be acting as carriers for other things you use in conjunction like vitamin E oil or BP. Do NOT use vitamin E oil without lots of jojoba oil, it will clog your pores like nobody's business. Sadly, I am speaking from experience. WITH jojoba oil, V-E will be a super-moisturizer (V-E molecules are HUGE- you can google this- and they will clog pores on their own).

Personally I have oily-ness in my T-zone and when I started using jojoba oil (which I was reluctant to do at first because it seemed counter-intuitive) it actually helped the oily-ness. This is when I dabbed a few drops on, not smeared a handful on my face.

I think adding a few drops to your moisturizer is a great idea in dry climates or seasons. I find that in the summer here I don't need it because it is humid, or I only use it instead of moisturizer and only a few drops. I also use it on my legs after shaving.

Anyway, I hope some of this information helps convince the skeptics that it's a great product overall!

*Just a warning, about 99% of people will love jojoba oil and have no reaction to it, but there are some that have reported adverse reactions to it on acne.org. I am not sure why that happened but I would rather be safe than sorry. So if you get to try it, please try it on a patch of your skin for a few days before deciding whether to continue.

I couldn't agree more...jojoba oil along w/ this entire regimen has done wonders for my skin! I am only sad that I didn't discover this earlier...I am 29 and have been dealing with mild acne since 7th grade. I was always using really harsh products making my skin worse and more irritated, if only I had listened to my mother :boohoo: she was always telling me be gentle you are using to many different things. But I didn't know how or what to do, I just thought if i kept piling on different creams something would help dry my acne out. That's what I have learned with the help of this site, calm your skin (don't dry it out) and it will clear.

Yup Jojoba is the only moisturizer my skin can tolerate without going red raw. One wierd thing about it though, every time I change the brand of jojoba oil, even though all of them are 100% pure, my skin will be irritated the first few days as if it is getting used to the new brand.

That IS strange. I wonder what difference brand makes? Well if I ever switch to another jojoba brand I will look out for that.

Yeah, like peacemama said, I used to think that by never moisturizing my face and allowing it to dry out, this would "dry out" my acne. But thanks to everyone's, Dan's included!, advice, I found that after moisturizing, my skin wasn't as oily, looked healthier, AND it cleared up! I've only been using Dan's treatment for about two weeks now, but it's been nothing short of a miracle. Thanks Dan!

Hmm, I think what you want (improve skin tone and lighten hyperpigmentation) is more what AHA is said to do. Jojoba oil is more for natural moisture to dry skin and helps with flakiness and perhaps helps with irritation (at least for me). You might want to read the posts about AHA? I just put some AHA on today. We will see how it works on my dark marks and skin tone...

just wondering, how do you use jojoba in place of your regular moisturizer? just dab a few drops on with your fingers and spread it around? or cotton wool etc?

Yup, I usually just wash my hands and face (wash my face with just water), and then pat it dry, then spread the jojoba oil around my face. I leave it for about 5 minutes to let it soak in and then splash my face with cold water a couple of times so that I dont look oily as hell

Hmmm even stranger is this, Ive been using this one brand of jojoba oil and my skin has been doing pretty great whilst using it, well yesterday I bought another bottle (the other one was running out) of the same brand and started using it, and lo and behold my skin feels slightly irritated again, maybe not as bad as when I completely change brands but still a little bit....Its weird, maybe its just coincidence (although I cant think of anything else that could be the cause) but I think going on accutane made my skin stupidly sensitive.

HAS ANYONE TRIED TO MIX IN JOJOBA OIL WITH THEIR CLEANSER??????????? I have really dry skin and only wash my face once a day.....I read on numerous retail sites that jojoba oil is good for cleaning out pores.....This along with the oil cleansing testimonies have me curious as to whether or not this will increase or decrease the effectiveness of your cleanser.....ANYONE have any ideas or experience??

1. Just because a molecule looks chemically similar doesn't mean it's treated by the skin exactly the same. It doesn't take much to result in a large difference.

2. Even if it was, why would you want your skin to be even more oily?

I find mineral oil and petrolatum to be for less poor-cloggin than Jojoba Oil. At the end of the day, though, it's the combination of ingredients, not the individual ones, that will contribute to issues. And I suppose your own skin amounts to one of those ingredients.

So results may vary. I'm just glad I didn't buy a gallon of the stuff.

I stopped using jojoba oil because I found it clogged my pores and also slightly irritated my skin, although it took me a while to realise it was doing so, Ive since switched to sunflower oil which is much much better imo, zero irritation and it doesnt clog my pores at all. However it is a little bit runny which can be annoying.

How is mineral oil? I have a big bottle sitting at home but havent used it yet since im ok with sunflower oil, Id really like to try it though.
