I recently started using Aveeno Moisturising Lotion, and ever since, my face starts to look oily during the day. When I apply it, it absorbs quickly and my face looks fine. I don't know whether this is because I've started to drink more water during the day though, instead of drinking it all at night, or whether it's just because it's been over 38 degrees here. It just doesn't make sense to me how a moisturiser can go on looking fine and non oily, then starts to look oily during the day? I started using this moisturiser as my skin was starting to get a little dry,
Well I know that when I wash my face, the oil isn't there and my skin feels normal, but when I wake up its oily and throughout the day it gets even more oily, which is when I usually break out. So..I don't know..maybe try not using moisturizer, it seems your skin is hydrated enough with the sebum.
Probably because it's a combination of the occlusive agents (dimethicone, petrolatum) and your sebum. Occlusive ingredients aren't absorbed into your skin; they will just "sit" on top of it unless washed or rubbed off. When the sebum returns, it may "highlight" the occlusives on your skin.
Estranged, I am like you. I have tried many moisturizers and all give my face an oily look within 4-5 hours of applying. I didn't like the feel of them either....greasy, slippery, yuk. When the weather is warm it's even worse. Dust and dirt sticks to it...yuk again. Guess I've never been a fan of putting lotion on my face, I don't even use one. I do use CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion on my hands and body. It seems pretty light and not greasy. It's dermatologically pretty good too. You might want to try it if you haven't already.
I tried using a smaller amount, guess I'll try even smaller. Just a bit mad that I've been through 5 moisturisers in the past 2 weeks.
Five? Eek! What other moisturizers were they? Were they cream-based? Gel moisturizers are typically better for oily, acne-prone skin.
Cetaphil Hydrating Lotion, QV Face Moisturising Day Cream, Vaseline Aloe Fresh Lotion, Aveeno Moisturising Lotion, even tried my old cetaphil moisturising lotion

I don't want to have to have to buy another moisturiser

Those five moistuizers are better for generally drier skin and those with atopic dermatitis or getting dry skin and lips from Accutane. Out of the five, the Cetaphil one is the lightest, the CeraVe a close second. How long did you stick with the Cetaphil one?

Have you ever tried a gel-based moisturizer or mattifier before?
Michelle,
Some of the moisturizers I have tried that come to mind are: Phisoderm Clarifying Gel Facial Moisturizer, Eucerin Daily Protection Moisturizing Face Lotion, Olay Complete Moisturizer for Combo/Oily Skin, Neutrogena Oil Free Moisturizer, Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion. These all had similar consistency so I'm not sure why one is "gel" and the others are "lotions"? I understand you are trying to help me, but at this time I'm not in the market for a moisturizer. The CeraVe one I use on my body is fine and I'm content to simply not use one on my face. Frankly, for the past 4 months my face has been the clearest it's been in 30 years just using a prescription sulfur cleanser and Dickinsons foaming facial wash. I don't want to start tinkering with moisturizers and goof things up. Thanks anyway though!

Nah, I was just wondering if you did. Cream-based products tend to have heavier occlusives and more humecants in them, which is why they can feel heavier and greasier especially on oily skin. Some people with oilier skin have only used creamy products so they wonder why their skin feels sticky and sweaty, which switching to a lighter "moisturizer" usually corrects that.
Lotions can have the same, higher viscosity (thickness) as gels, but lotions tend to have more skin-softeners and humecants than gels do. Lotions and gels, while they can be quite similar in looks and thickness, they are not interchangeable words.
Anyway, I'm happy you've obtained really good results from your new regimen! Congratulations!

Waaaaiiiiit a minute, what are some examples of gel-based moisturizers? I have acne-prone oily skin and I use Cetaphil Hydrating Lotion. When my face gets shiney, I just blot the oil away using an oil wipe, tissue, or paper towel. But this gel-based stuff sounds like a step up. Can someone point me in the direction with a few quality gel-based moisturizers?

Paula's Choice 2% BHA Gel Exfoliant is a gel moisturizer. Another example would be Neutrogena Rapid Clear 2-in-1 Fight & Fade Gel.
There aren't many basic good gel moisturizers on the market right now, let alone ones with salicylic acid because many of them have been discontinued. The problem with some gel moisturizers is they have occlusive agents but little humecants in them like glycerin, which can keep skin dry and they may not be hydrating enough if you're using "harsher" products or in a more drying environment. Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel is one basic moisturizer that is easily accessable. I'm trying to look for more well formulated gels, but I'm having a difficult time finding them. Neutrogena as a few gels, mostly in face washes but some spot treatments.
Torquemonster - what rx sulfur cleanser are you using?
Ripon,
The cleanser I've been using is 10% sodium sulfacetamide / 5% sulfur. It's a generic manufactured by Prasco and is called Prascion. That company discontinued making the product in July 2012. I am just about done with the last bottle of it that I had. Recently the prescription was refilled with different generic manufactured by Acella. I haven't started using that one yet. I pray it works as well as the Prascion. This is the first cleanser cleanser I've ever used that cleared up my skin without irritation or redness. It can be drying if you are not careful with the usage. I only use it once a day and am quick with applying and rinsing off.
