Hi,

What's supposed to be better at speed healing acne-jojoba oil, or tea tree oil? Please let me know your experiences with both.

Thx :)

Jojoba is more of a moisturizer than a healer. Tea Tree can be irritating for some people, so if you decide to use it, test a portion of your face. Spot treat with Epsom salt to quickly shrink a spot.

thx for the info. My son has been using tea tree oil each night, which has been doing OK, but I noticed a lot of people talking about jojoba, which we have never used.

I haven't heard of Epsom salt to shrink a spot.... do you dilute it in water first, and make a paste? Does it shrink large bumps, the ones that have pus in them? sorry to be gross :\

To spot treat, put a small amount of Epsom salt crystals into a lid, add one drop of water and use a qtip to apply to the spot. It helps draw out the infection. You can do it every few hours to speed it up.

Yikes. The two cannot be compared.

Tea tree oil is anti-bacterial and at 100% strength, would burn your face. It's not very effective in treatment of acne either. But I still use tea tree sometimes for other things that require anti-bacterial.

Jojoba oil is commonly used as a moisturizer. It helps combat the drying effects of acne medications. I love the stuff.

my son has been using tea tree at 100% but hasn't experienced any face burning. It seems to help dry up the acne and heal the skin.

Check the back of the label, if its 100% strength and he's really not getting burns, he's got some resilient skin.

Usually, they're 15%-ish. But you can buy 100%, it's just not recommended to put it on your skin neat. Most definitely don't get it near your eyes!

It says 100% strength... do you think he could be damaging his face? He doesn't get it near his eyes. I'm thinking it would be obvious to me if he was getting burns... I don't see any damaged skin where he uses it. But maybe he should discontinue it, or dilute it.

Why do you say it doesn't do anything for acne? Is that from your personal experience, or what you've read? I know other people have recommended it for acne, which is why I bought it.

It's not too bad for spot treating and if his acne isn't too bad, it maybe ok.

I'd dilute it with a carrier oil such as Jojoba.

My personal experience was tea tree didn't help me much with acne. But then again for milder acne, tea tree wipes and lotion from the body shop, helps keep my brothers skin blemish free. I'd not say he has acne but if he doesn't us it, his skin goes downhill.

For more serious acne, a full Face treatment like benzoyl peroxide works better.

Yes - as others have said, jojoba is a great moisturising oil and tea tree oil is an antibacterial.

I've been using tea tree oil for my acne for the past few months and I think it does help speed up healing. I don't dilute it if I'm using it as a spot treatment and I've never had it burn my skin. If I use to much though the 'vapors' can irritate my eyes a little - even when it's not applied near my eyes - but this passes quickly. I've always thought my skin is on the sensitive side so I thought tea tree oil was something I'd have to dilute and be careful of but I guess I've been lucky and my skin is a little tougher than I first thought. I'll sometimes add a few drops of it into a moisturiser so I suppose that dilutes it slightly. Either way, I haven't had it burn my skin.

There have been studies into the effect of 5% tea tree oil gels compared to that of 5% benzoyl peroxide on acne. It showed both tea tree oil and benzoyl peroxide to be effective in improving acne and even though tea tree oil was slower to start working it had less side effects than BP. Link to study - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2145499

A more recent study - (although it has only a small sample size and is only comparing tea tree oil gel to a placebo) http://ijdvl.com/article.asp?issn=0378-6323;year=2007;volume=73;issue=1;spage=22;epage=25;aulast=Enshaieh

So it's not like tea tree oil does absolutely nothing for acne - though it could depend on the person. I haven't tried a tea tree oil gel though, like the studies mention, so I can't comment on that. I just meant to share the studies in case you were interested in finding out a little more about it and I think they show that tea tree oil does have some benefit in treating acne.

Personally I think tea tree oil and benzoyl peroxide have similar side effects anyway, and as with any treatment, it's just a matter of finding what works for the individual. And if you're son is happy with using tea tree oil and isn't having any problems with it then I don't see why he shouldn't still use it for a while longer.

Good luck with it all smile.png
