Hi guys

I have been using acne.org as my bible for all things acne and mainly users experience with Accutane (Roaccutane in the UK). Reading everyone's reviews really helped me before and during my treatment with Accutane.

I noticed that there is a lot of scaremongering amongst users on here and it almost stopped me from ever going on the treatment.

So my story, I had acne that started in my early teens and I had tried every OTC treatment as well as every prescription lotion, cream, antibiotics, birth control etc. I was 26 years old before my GP referred me to a dermatologist who immediately suggested Accutane. My acne was mostly bad on my back, neck and chest but I did have some breakouts on my face. The acne was also coupled with REALLY oily skin and very greasy hair. To the point that after an hour after getting out of the shower, I looked like an oil slick and looked like I hadnt showered in a week.

Almost immediately, the accutane dried my skin and hair up and I could go literally days without washing my hair and no one would be able to tell. I started on 20mg a day for 3 weeks and then 40mg thereafter. About 6 weeks into my treatment I did have very dry skin but nothing that Cetaphil/E45 cream couldnt solve.

My main 'bad' side effects were dry eyes and sores that appeared on my scalp. I used eye drops for the dry eyes and would put coconut oil on my scalp once a week and leave it overnight and just wash off in the morning. Towards the end of my 6 month treatment, I was experiencing nosebleeds 2-3 times a day but it helps to put moisturiser / vaseline inside my nose.

Since stopping accutane, my oil levels have returned to what they were (if not worse) than before accutane, so I am really upset by this as I thought it would be a cure for me. My acne cleared up COMPLETELY and I have had no breakouts since being off of accutane so I guess I can deal with the oil if I dont have huge cysts any more.

For anyone considering accutane, I would say dont listen to the people who are trying to scare you. It is so worth it.

Well. I'm glad that Accutane has worked for you, but for my mild/persistent acne, things don't look good for me. I've been on 60mg ( 3 pills a day ) for nearly 5 months now. After trying that acne.org moisturiser I seriously regret it. It broke me out in more spots. I had to go back to my old moisturiser, but my god never again. At this stage, i don't see it working anymore, but I got wait it out for the 7-month course so who knows.
