Since it cant be cured. Are there any great ways to cover up the redness?

i've found that maybelline colorstay for dry skin works best...your skin still feels really dry under the makeup but the makeup doesn't crack or flake off.

arturX- are you saying do something like wash your hair with anti-dandruff shampoo and see what happens?

and has anyone here tried any of the oral anti-fungal medications? what about tanning?

Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals over Conceal FX concealer has worked the best for me so far. I have had SD for 15 years and have tried everything I could get my hands on, this is a list of the current products I use;Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream, Yu-Be Lip Therapy, Yu-Be- Foaming Skin Polish and Aveeno Ultra Calming Moisturizer. This line of products has helped more so than any other I have tried, but has not eliminated my symptoms by any means. The skin polish seems to exfoliate very well, removing flaky skin and helping to attain a smooth surface to apply make-up onto, after which I apply the moisturizing cream which helps with the redness, inflamed appearance, and itching. My father also has SD and he likes how the moisturizing cream by Yu-Be keeps affected areas from getting hard and scaly. Tanning also does wonders for me, yet I have a hard time affording it. Hope this helps someone, I know I am always on the look out for anything I haven't tried yet that could possibly work.

Here's how I cleared my lifelong (40 yrs) SD. 99% clear. My GP recently said he could see no signs of it at all. 6 months clear now.

1: Ditch all products/shampoos with Sulfates. Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate etc are known skin irritants and are used in labs as such. Real nasty ingredients which will do your skin no favours especially if you have SD.

2: Get chlorine filters fitted to your water supply and only wash with filtered water.

3 Wash scalp with baking soda (not baking powder). Must be pure bicarbonate of soda. A little will do, wet hair and apply baking soda, be careful not to leave on too long, find out the length of time suitable for you. I wet hair, then use 1/2- 3/4 of a teaspoon to wash my scalp, I leave it on for 2-5 mins before rinsing off. Clears dandruff like nothing I've ever used.

4 Wash face with only filtered water and weak baking soda solution. Baking soda kills yeasts. Tread carefully though, and don't burn your skin with it. Use it as a face wash. I use 1/2 teaspoon in about 3/4 pint of water. Gently rinse face with that solution and leave on for no longer than 1-2 minutes. It is important that you find the dosage that will suit your skin so be careful.

5 If you are male stay clean shaven as much as possible and use only the gentlest shaving products that you can find on your face.

6 Avoid all bread products, bread, cakes, biscuits etc. Also try to avoid grains and cereals as much as possible. Eat a low carb diet and low GCI foods.

7 Eat plenty or raw veg, the more the better, frozen will do as well but the more raw the better, broccoli, spinach, kale, carrots, leafy greens etc.

8 Avoid sugars and fatty processed foods.

9 Drink bottled or filtered water only. Fizzy drinks and caffeine flared my SD badly.

10 Change your bedclothes and pillowcases regularly.

11 If you must use cream on your face avoid steroids at all costs. I had best results with Zinc Oxide (Diaper rash) facemasks which can be kept on for as long as desired.

12 Supplements I take are; Flaxseed oil, Zinc,1 Antihistamine per day, B complex in the form of Brewers Yeast (but any B complex pills will do) Selenium tablet that contains vit A and E as well.

13 If you smoke quit.

14 And finally try to get some sun, exercise and stay positive.

This worked for me. My skin is almost crystal clear. I hope it is of some help to someone. Remember if you decide to follow the steps I've outlined here give it time. Yeasts are hard to kill but you can get there. I'll be happy to answer any questions. Good Luck!!!!

I have a perfect circular rash in the middle of my forehead. you name a symptom and I have. It flakes, itches, shiny, feels tight, is yellow with alot of red mixed in. The pigmentation is totally different than the skin on the rest of my face. I have tried everything in the world; steroids, argan oil, tea tree oil, sulphur/znp soaps, msm cream, promiseb, every conazole cream, and every shampoo meant for seborheic and washed my face with it but still nothing and has gotten worse. My dermo gave me elidel 6 days ago and I have been using it but dont notice anything. I can sorta control the flakes if I work out every day or two and get the flakes to clear but the redness is killlllling me. Can anyone give me any advice on what they do if they have seb/rosacea on their forehead? also if you used elidel let me know how you used it? like how many times a day and how much at a time and do you use a soap before you use it? ANY advice is useful. thank you.

interesting..

wonder if this could work for SD. I mean it makes sense if a healthy flora is what we're looking for. search this up on google and see how many people have been successful doing this at home for other diseases and in the small clinical studies the success rates have been overwhelming yet its like a last resort sort of thing. Wonder why? Of course, its the money :)

I've had SD for about 8 years now so I have a bit of experience on the subject which I think can help you lot!

Although Moonset has raised some points which may be valuable to some, I have not followed any of them and I've been clear for the majority of the 8 years. However I'm sure his points will benefit SD and/or other skin complaints.

So a few points, SD does infact spread, for me if I scratched or bothered surrounding skin, it would spread to that area. It began around my nose, then spread to under my eyes and onto the bridge of my nose. It DOES however leave that area although there usually is a "trouble" spot of which it begins (for me around my nose).

Unfortunately anti-fungals do not last forever. I used Nizoral 2% cream with Ketoconazole for about 6 years until simply, it stopped working. I went to my GP who prescribed another anti-fungal (used to treat thrush) which didn't work at all.

This lead me to the discovery of the ZNP bar, haven't looked back since. Use it every 2 days as it is very drying and use in the evening. It works magic, all you need to use and lasts a very long time (still have a bar the same size as when I bought it half a year ago).

A few depressing factors with SD is that I've lost the ability to tan well on my face. This has been reported with other SD sufferers. I'm naturally olive skinned and I used to tan nicely on holiday. My body still turns a golden brown but my face just becomes red with tanning in the eye sockets and around the hairline (gives me a pretty weird appearance). HOWEVER I get a slight tan after returning from holiday (strange I know, get the tan when I get home)

Deaky I can sympathise with you (I laid off going to the GP for 2 years so suffered during school with bright red painful/itchy circular scales on my face), all I could suggest is grow your hair so you have a fringe to cover and experiment while it's covered.

I'm still trying to sort out my oily skin, problem with SD plus the large pores :\

But yeah if any of you wanna ask any questions about it, PM me and I will see what I can do.

hey mastershadow, do you use lukewarm or cold water when using znp and is the soap all you use, no creams?, also have you ever used elidel, its day 12 right now of me using it and it looks a little bit improved but is still very noticeable, he wants me to use it for a month so i will. and do you do anything for the redness or does the skin ever return to somewhat normal pigmentation again? thanks for any answers

Yo Deaky, can't quote your question for some reason.

I wash with cold water and only ZNP bar, no creams. I used to use Nizoral till it lost it's effectiveness

The ZNP bar gets rid of flakes, gives you super smooth skin but dries like hell. The skin does also return to a normal shade after a short period of time (1-2 weeks).

Im just a kid looking for some help. Woke up about two years ago around the age of 13 with a face randomely red. Been plagued with serb derm problems ever since. Went to a doctor who gave me a cortozine creme, the dead crap on my face completely fell away and i was normal again. However, i grew greedy. Used it too much, im assuming the crap on my face developed some kind of resistance. Beaten it another time with a moistirizer of some sort and exercise. It came back within a month.

However, im a pretty chilled back guy and i dont get angry at things like this. However i just had a session of itching wildy at my face to get the dead skin off, it crated a layer of crap on my bed. Had to brush it off. Im 15 now and looking for help. The saddest part is ive gone from the guy who people envy to the guy who people pity. People treat me different now, and no im not insane. It seems that 95% of peoples judgement is based on what you look like and not who you are.

The dead skin is pretty much all over, particularly in and above my eyebrows giving a distinct red stain above my eyebrows. Lead to many a cruel comments. The thing is though, im a clean slate, and im sure i can be helped. Ive only tried two crappy steriod creams before i realised they do more harm than good. Im open to any treatment or any help. I could look through 38 pages of text but i think its better if i just told my story and people could offer direct help 1 to 1.

Sorry if nobody cares, i understand. Im not the best at English so its actually taken a good amount of time to write these few paragraphs, sorry if its not set out the best. Good luck and thank-you

casey , i would ask your dermo for Elidel. I have used it for 2 weeks and its not a miracle but it feels better and keeps the flakes and the itching down but the redness is still there. I have tried so many things , I listed them above and elidel seems to work the best but its NOT a miracle. The ZNP soap is pretty good I am using that every 2 days. also I have to use makeup to cover up the redness so theres a route for you to go just dont cake it on there.

How long you been using ZNP? Pretty much resolved everything for me, also look into what facial wash you use as that may be causing the irritation.

Hmmm that's odd, you could try a few things I've had success with in the past like sulphur soap and moisterisers with green tinted ingredients to balance out the redness.

My dad has bad SD even at 60, he also had acne till college. I have acne even in 30's. I read here that "

The problem in seborrheic dermatitis is in the oil (sebaceous) glands and hair follicles. People with seborrheic dermatitis produce too much sebum (the natural skin oil). Later, pityrosporum yeast grows excessively in the sebum, sometime along with bacteria, making the dermatitis more persistent."< http://www.aocd.org/skin/dermatologic_dise...ermati.html>

I feel like I have finally found why I still have oily skin and acne at 31. I guess I inherited the too much sebum gene from my dad. And I am afraid I might still have acne at 60 like my dad still has SD at 60. So now I am going to take accutane. I read that some docs are now prescribing low dose accutane for SD? Taking care of the excess sebum should cure SD just like it does acne?

Some people actually "get" SD adter being on a course of accutane so I'm not sure.

People who have acne are more prone to get SD later on in life, from what I have read. Like my dad had acne till college and later SD. Both diseases are associated with excess sebum and p.acnes or yeast growing too much in that sebum and causing inflammation. Those who took accutane for acne were already more likely to get SD anyway in their later life. This does not mean that accutane actually gave them SD...

Has anyone tried the no 'poo method for SD on the scalp?

I haven't shampooed for a month now and I have noticed some improvement. The typical method uses baking soda and ACV but I have been using the 50/50 green tea/white vinegar combination every second night.

I had been using the formula for the past year but had been washing it out with shampoo and I have been able to keep it under control to a certain point but the flakes still remain. So I decided to go with the no 'poo method and so far the flaking has been reduced. Has anyone else tried this?

Yes the baking soda helped. There are lots of people who have claimed to cure SD using it. I found out that what I was putting on my scalp to treat my SD/Dandruff was actually affecting my Facial SD for the worse. I cut out all shampoos and most hair care products. I wash scalp with baking soda using about 1/3 of a teaspoon. Then when in shower wet face and use baking soda on wet face. Be careful with amount. A tiny fingernail size amount will do to begin with. When you put the amount in your hand put a few drops of water on it to dissolve it a bit then scrub your face gently with it. It should feel like you are using an exfoliant. Be extremely careful with amount. Use small amounts to begin with. Leave on for 1-2 mins to begin with then rinse thoroughly. You can leave on for longer when you get your skin used to it. It will take time. Shower and wash your whole head and face with baking soda twice daily. Try to do this for at least 1 month. It may take longer.

I also drink baking soda. Place 2 tsps in about half pint of water and mix. Keep in fridge and sip throughout the day. This kills yeasts in your gut.

Do not use baking soda on really inflamed skin. You can get your skin well cleared up by following the other steps I've outlined first but you must stick to that regime. Eat lots of raw veg and drink ONLY bottled water. I wash my bedclothes and towels in baking soda only plus change pillowcases every day and bedclothes every 2-3 days.

If you have any further questions please ask. P.s I also used Sudocrem face masks which helped me enormously.

Hi everyone,

I've been a lurker on this site for YEARS. I haven't contributed yet because I really haven't found much help with my own situation until now.

My history:

I've always struggled with acne on and off over the years in my teens I was pretty clear though.

When I was 18 I had mild acne and started using ProActiv which worked like a dream for me at first. Amazingly clear skin for a few years.

Then around 22 I began getting cystic hormonal acne. I went for facials, microderm, chemical peels etc. Those helped "a little" but the hormonal acne continued. I was put on a bunch of Physician's Choice products which were terrible for me very very harsh products. After realizing my doctor at the skin clinic wasn't making matters better for me I went back on ProActiv and it immediately cleared up a lot of the acne I was having.

I still was getting some rather painful cysts each month and went to my regular doctor who prescribed me Diane 35 - not sure if this is still on the market or not. It cleared me up like nothing has in my life. However it caused some strange side affects including depression and a kind of cloud like feeling in my head. I didn't feel myself. I then switched to Ortho Tri-Cyclen birth control and it continue to keep my skin clear with less side affects however still some. After years of taking Birth control I finally decided to get off them around the age of 28.

At 28 we moved from the East to the West side of the country. I continued to have pretty clear skin after getting off BC for around a year. It was then that I started getting lots of tiny little bumps on my forehead, neck, and behind my ears. I thought this was the acne coming back and was treating it with ProActiv and glycolic products. However the ProActiv wasn't working like it used to for me the glycolic products were working a bit though. Thinking this was still acne I went onto Dan's regimen. My skin got progressively worse over the year I was using his system. More and more little bumps. I thought maybe it was my cosmetics as I had read that little bumps were often the culprit from cosmetics not hormonal acne.

Well I began trying all kinds of natural products, mineral makeups, tea tree oils, but things began getting worse and worse and worse! I had never seen so many tiny bumps all over my face and nothing at all was clearing them up.

So I quit the natural products went back on ProActiv and got myself reasonably back to normal.

This last year I would continuously get these little bumps though and I was certain it wasn't acne despite my doctor saying it was likely the cause of hormones. She had prescribed me prescription strength BP which I didn't end up using.

I started connecting the dots and self-diagnosed.

1) I had an itchy flakey scalp and eyebrows

2) I found I was having breakouts to a lot of mineral makeups particularly those containing Rice Powders or Corn Starch. Not hormonal type breakouts tiny flesh colored bumps all over my face.

3) I also discovered that Titanium Dioxide was a trigger for these rash type breakouts.

4) SULFATES - cause breakouts. One day I used a cleanser containing sulfates in one area of my face to test whether I was allergic. Within a couple hours I had a huge cyst in that area.

5) Glycerin sensitivity particularly those made from food based products - the jury is still out on this ingredient for me. I'm going to test a sulfate free cleanser that contains glycerin to be sure it's not also a culprit for me.

6) ALSO WATER - check your water people. Another suspicious element to my condition was that when I would go East to visit my family my itchy scalp and breakouts behind my ears and on my neck would clear up. The water in your area could be making your SD worse. We started using a filter on our shower head which has helped out immensely!! I have read on a few websites that if you have hard water it can cause SD on your scalp and body.

When I started researching different conditions online I found that Seb Derm sufferers often suffer from breakouts when they use products that contain food based ingredients. I was wondering for the life of me why these mineral makeups weren't working. They didn't contain Titanium dioxide but they did contain Corn Starch and Rice Powder. This led me to further research and is when I discovered that SD sufferers produce too much oil and the breakouts on your face are a fungi infection. Fungi feed on food based ingredients and oils. This explained why a lot of the natural products I was using weren't working for me as many of them contain oils and or food based ingredients.

I began treating my problem starting with my scalp. Nizoral once a week - note that this does contain SLS which if used everyday can cause problems for SD. I use it once a week without problem and it helps to clear build up. Initially use Nizoral for 6-8 weeks twice a week after that use it once a week for maintenance. Next step for everyday use switch to SLS free shampoo. This week I have been using the Giovanni Shampoos and Conditioners which have really helped to relieve the itchiness I was having before. I would also recommend staying away from any shampoos that are overly conditioning that may leave build up behind. I was using Pureology and found it much too moisturizing on my scalp.

Next step get rid of the breakouts behind my ears, on my neck, and on my forehead. I bought DermaDoctor Born To Be Mild - and yes I was very very skeptical that this would work for me but it DID! It contains Pyrithone Zinc which seems to clear these breakouts almost immediately. At least for me it did. It also contains a sulfate however I find using it once a week doesn't bother me and the Zinc works really well to clear a SD breakout. I use it once or twice a week on problem areas and it works like magic - for me that is!

Next step was to find a sunscreen that would work on my skin and not burn, give me a breakout, and not be greasy. Titanium Dioxide breaks me out, Avobenzene burns, and most sunscreens that contain Zinc also contain Titanium. I was at my wits end and about to throw the in the towel and give up ever going outside again until I thought I would give a Zinc only sunscreen a chance. In walks Elta MD UV Clear. AMAZING! It hasn't caused me any breakouts it also seems to work on keeping my skin clear. Great great stuff. The only thing I would suggest is to make sure you moisturize with it or it can be quite drying. The moisturizer I've used for the last couple years without problem is Peter Thomas Roth oil free moisturizer - make sure you get the one without sunscreen in it. Great stuff at least for me it's been a god send!

The last two things I'm trying to figure out in my routine are:

1) A cleanser that will work for me I've tried everything under the sun and the only one that doesn't break me out is ProActiv. I would like something gentler and a little better at removing makeup so I'm still on the hunt for a new one. Right now I'm considering trying Shisheido or La Roche Toleriane however they contain Glycerin which I think could be a problem for me. I used a vitamin C serum the other week and it began clogging my pores right away. The ingredients were vit C and glycerin only. I have heard that some people can be sensitive to vit C so glycerin may not be a problem for me. The only reason I thought it might be was after some research online I read that Glycerin made from food based products can be a problem for some with SD.

2) A makeup that doesn't contain food ingredients, titanium Dioxide, or bismuth oxychloride, or oils. Oye! Almost impossible I think! I'm using Revlon Colorstay for oily skin right now and it doesn't cause major problems for me but I suspect thew few bumps I'm getting are from the Titanium Dioxide. It has a very low dose of TD so I think that's why I can get away with it. I use it for now because it's the only one that doesn't cause major breakouts. I'm looking at trying MakeUp Forever's Duo Matte next but we shall see. I've given up completely on Mineral Makeups as they all contain one ingredient or another that have caused major problems. I also think people with SD might have issues with Mineral cosmetics because they don't control oil very well. Anytime I use a makeup that leaves my face shiny tends to cause increased breakouts. Oh an on occasion for a primer I use Milk of Magnesia mixed with water to smooth my pores. I works like a dream for me - regular non flavored MOM. Also I wouldn't use it everyday because I suspect it might increase oil production. On occasion it's a nice primer that doesn't clog pores and makes your skin look smooth.

I work out 5 days a week walking 3 - 5 miles. No sugar, refined carbs etc. Hardly any dairy. Meat maybe 1 - 2 times a week and it's grain fed organic etc. I take a multivitamin and a low dose B5 chewable gummy, Omega 3 capsule, and Calcium supplement. Working on my water intake that's always been a tough one for me.

So what products am I using at this exact moment?

AM:

ProActiv Cleanser

Aqua Glycolic Toner - LOVE this stuff

Moisturize Peter Thomas Roth Oil Free

Sunscreen Elta MD Clear

Revlon ColorStay for oily skin

Makeup Forever HD powder - silica powder - amazing stuff won't break you out or clog pores

Blush - L'Oreal True Match. Watch out for most blushes that contain Bismuth Oxychloride this was a major problem for me.

PM:

ProActiv Cleanser

Aqua Glycolic Toner

Peter Thomas Roth Oil Free

On occasion some Benzoyl Peroxide to clear up any acne but I'm trying to quit using it

Once a week - Nizoral Shampoo, Once or Twice a week DermaDoctor Born to Be Mild Cleanser.

Right now looking for a different cleanser, a Vitamin C serum that won't break me out, and a foundation that doesn't contain Titanium Dioxide.

I'm about to turn 31 and have struggled with acne since I was in my early 20's. I think I have had SD since I was 27 or 28. I only recently realized that it was SD and had been treating it with Acne treatments before.

Sorry if my writing is bad I was really excited to let everyone know what's been working for me. If you have questions just ask however I'm no expert. I've just spent hours and hours and hours researching things online. Some of which comes from other members in forums like this and sometimes online research from doctors and most of my experiences have been trial and error which means I've gone through many breakouts and a lot of $$ over the years!

One more thing:

I'm also testing out Vanicream Light lotion for an evening moisturizer. I read about it in some Seb Derm and Rosacea forums.

I'll post and let you know how those products work for me.

Also can someone recommend a good cleanser? Preferably with no Sulfates, Glycerin, Oil, or food related ingredients?

Hi guys, I have a minor case of SD around my nose. There is redness at the side of my nose and under my nostrils. This is the only place I have it. My scalp and other parts of my face are not affected. I have tried 1% hydrocortisone cream but that did no good. I have read that nizoral shampoo can cure it. Do you guys think it would be a good idea to buy the shampoo and apply it to my nose? I live in Canada so I think I may be able to find it at my local drug store.
