Hi All,

I'm a new member at Acne.org and this is my first post, i apologise if it all sounds like i'm ranting.

I have had acne since i was 14 years old and began seeking treatments when i was 17.

In the beginning, all the treatments that the doctor gave me failed to work till i went to a private derm and he prescribed me a low dose of accutane ( 20mg 2x/wk) and an antibiotics.

Well, it worked! And i was thrilled! However, i didn't know that was actually the beginning of my worst nightmare.

Somewhere last December, i forgot to take my normal dose of accutane and everything spiralled down. My oily skin and acne came back and even worse, it came back with an additional topping: Seborrheic Dermatitis.

I panicked and went back to my dermatologist immediately and he increased my dose of accutane and gave me antibiotics again. When i asked him about the peeling skin at the side of nose, he could not give me a reply and just chased me out of the room! That was when i started to distrust him.

So i went to another doctor regarding the peeling and he prescribed me 1% hydrocortisone cream. It worked like a charm! And i didn't have any acne or dermatitis problems till Aug'11.

I started my Uni education in Aug'11 and around that time, i was suddenly incredibly stressed out about my physical appearance. I think that must have been the cause or at least contributing factor because my acne came back even though i was on accutane.

I went back to my Derm and he prescribed me antibiotics again. This time, i was determined to ask him as many questions as i could (normally my consultation only last 5 mins) regarding my peeling nose as well and he chased me out of the room again!

So, i've decided to stop going back to him and i did not take the antibiotics again because the derm wanted to keep me on both accutane and antibiotics till i'm 25-26 ( or till i outgrow acne) and i'm only 19 this year! I will totally wreck my internals if i continue taking accutane, even though it is only a mild dosage (I'm currently on 20mg 1x/wk).

I'm trying to wean myself off accutane by gradually lengthening my timing of taking the pill but i'm really really scared my acne will come back with vengeance. Furthermore, my seborrheic dermatitis have spread till my laugh lines, around my nose and on top of my lips. It's red, crusty, itchy and painful and totally destroying my confidence. Imagine that on top of inflammed acne!

Also, i've been to a Naturopath and he prescribed me some supplements and told me dietary restrictions. I did a food intolerance test but the results are not out yet. I've been on supplements all along because my mum buys them for the whole family but they wasn't much help for my acne.

I also went to another doctor because my dermatitis was everywhere last week and he just prescribed me hydrocort + clioquinol cream. However, i'm so scared of putting steriods on my face! Although currently i don't have any other choice. I'm not even sure if its helping.

I have stopped using my facewash and currently i am only using oatmeal to wash my face. I'm at a loss of what to do and my self-esteem is at an all time low. My parents cannot stand me and they have been telling me to stop using anything on my face. I'm so scared and i have no idea what to do. It's like i'm obsessed over my face, it's all i think about every single waking moment and i'm lagging behind in my school work. I don't even want to go to school anymore because i am so ashamed of how i look. I have no friends to confide in too.

I have a strong feeling that accutane caused all this and i want to stop it but fear is hindering me. I know that time is what i need now and everything will pass but it's so hard to hold on to anything when i have no idea where to start. I'm so afraid of using anything on my face as well in case it makes everything worse.

I just want everything to go away. Acne and seborrheic dermatitis.

Sorry about my rant. I appreciate anyone's time in reading this post.

@flying_wind, I wouldn't use the cortisone cream on your face. Creams don't seem to work very well for this condition and cortisone creams can cause other problems like thinning the skin. I had success treating mine with diet for a while, but have had a recent outbreak... not exactly sure why.

What kind of dietary restrictions did the naturopath recommend? What about supplements?

@n@me:- this is how i got rid of it the first time

1) medications : elidel cream (i only use it when required)

fucidin h cream (fusidic acid) (i use it as a spot acne treatment)

2) face : sensitive facial cleanser

gillette fusion hydra gel for ultra sensitive skin

gillette fusion thermal face scrub before shaving

razor gillette pro glide power

3) diet : detox diet (aviod spicy oily food)

no smoking, minimum alcohol intake (well when i was clear i used to smoke and drink quite a lot)

4) water : 3-5 ltrs of water everyday

5) cleanliness : be an obsessive cleanliness freak (dont use soft towels for patting ur face dry instead use soft facial tissues only, change pillow covers and bed sheets every 3-4 days and many other small things like washing hands, wearing clean clothes etc.)

6) patience : its all u need dont get too anxious and jump to try new things like medications, derms, cosmetic treatments etc just believe in urself n pray

LOL! sometimes destiny often test us after doing so much for my skin due to my letting loose control nature i ended up with a bad flare up sad.png but im sure im gonna surely come out of this too..

planning to try dermazinc cream and born to be mild medicated face cleanser by dermadoctor.. anyone has tried these products?

I have used Dermadoctors Born to be Mild Cleanser and find it a bit drying on its own. I mix it with my regular cleanser. Either CeraVe or Avenes Gentle Cleanser. It does initially help smooth things out but it is still flakey and dry. when Im red and irritated it makes things look worse. I used ZNP bar years ago and it was VERY drying. I just ordered two products by dermatologist Cynthia Bailey. Her Replenix CF cream, specifically for SD and rosacea sufferers and her Zinc bar which look promising.

hey all. i havnt been on acne.org in months but i thought i'd stop by and see if i could get a diagnosis on my skin before i try to get to a dermatologist. basically back in june, i was tired of having pretty oily skin. at this time i still had a red face from benzoyl peroxide, even though i stopped using it 3 months prior. anyways, for the next 3 months all i did was wash with water once a day (about midday), and after a while, the oilyness on my cheeks was basically gone; instead, it was replaced by a lot of flakes, some which seemed to become imbedded in my skin, like scales. before going to college, i exfoliated hardcore and basically got rid of all these scales on my face.. and so for the past 2 months, i have been battling flakes on my face everyday; however, by using honey, colloidal oatmeal, and yogurt, the flakes have definetly reduced, but are still prevalent every day, especially after i wash my face in the shower. the flakes are basically everywhere on my face, probably most prevalent on the inner parts of my cheeks near my nose, but they are also in the creases of my nose, in my eyebrows, and all over my cheeks. so basically, is it possible that because i was only washing with water, i developed SD that feeds on my oily cheeks? is that why they are no longer oily, becuase of this fungal infection? It seems i have all the symptoms, but i dont want to jump to conclusions..

and btw, if it is SD.. any1 have any recommendations? (nothing harsh like anti-dandruff shampoo; i still get acne from time to time, and my skin is still damaged from bp use; for osme reason, it is still red)

Has anyone ever tried the follwoing product-

http://www.trustnature.com/derm-essentials/seborrheic-dermatitis.html

I have used this product for the past month and it is helping. Certainly takes away the dryness but I am still battling the redness.

Does anyone know what the best form of allergy testing is? i.e. blood test/hair test etc? I have read up that sometimes if the allergy test comes back negative some things i.e bread and dairy products can still cause a flare up. My question is regardless of the allergy test is it worth while cutting out bread and dairy products for say a month? I would find this very hard as i always have milk with cereal and eat a lot of bread but if it is worth a shot I would do it.

ACV- should this be taking internally i.e over salads aswell as externally?

I am currently seeing a homeopath to see is she can help... I think I am heading in right direction with the remedy's I have tried so far.

Also has anyone tried the following [Edited link out]It is meant to be highly recommended.

Bar spending a fortune on suppliments etc I think I am slowly starting to get to the root of my problem

I think oils help my Seb Derm, but there is articles claiming by adding oils externally it can make it worse.

just an update on the cynthia bailey products...the verdict is still out. The zinc bar is ok on forehead but as far as the rest of my face its a bit drying. I tried mixing it with my regular sensitive cleanser but that didnt do it either. My worst area is just under my cheeks and above my jawline. I had it cleared up and then two days ago its flared again..Sometimes I get confused if its actually SD or my rosacea flaring. This is how I would describe it. Flat, red,dry and flakey plaques of skin. They vary in shape and size and almost resemble what happens to a pimple as its fading. They are generally coverable with makeup during the day but first thing in the morning and after I wash my face it looks like a rash with spotted white patches in between. I guess the white is the "good" skin". Ive applied protopic and this helps with the dryness but does not help the redness fade. Does ACV help fade them or prevent them? I tried lemon last night at the recomendation of another person on a forum and it made it look so much dryer. I did eat a bit of bread the other day but generally stay away from yeast products..I have not eaten dairy in a year so thats not the issue. I also have Eletone cream and EpiCeram...tried them but didnt help fade the redness...I feel like its worse now than in the summer...anyone else feel that? Oh and the Replenix Cream is a nice cream but not sure what its purpose is...Its not much for a moisturizer and didnt do diddly in the redness dept.

Hi All, I have had seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp for about 18 months (probably a precursor to the acne problem which cropped up a few months ago) and have learnt that I'm able to keep it under control with regular treatments of selenium sulphide 25 mg/mL, but I was wondering if I should be using any particular conditioner with the shampoo treatment? At the moment I'm using my previous products, some expensive Kerastase (gentle glossy shine serum or something-or-other, which implies you'll look like Miranda Kerr just by using it), and some generic straight-hair Pantene (guys will be falling over themselves to smell your hair and it's not creepy at all) stuff.

The Selsun shampoo I'm using is pretty hard on my very-long-and-in-need-of-a-trim hair (so worth it to control the seb derm, but it makes it near impossible to be able to wear out these days; I have straight, well-behaved, not too oily, not too dry hair normally), and I am interested to know if anyone has found any particular brand that works well with it, or if anyone has any experience with knowing whether to avoid certain active ingredients during treatment which might irritate the skin, etc.? Should I be looking for a nourishing / gentle / natural / repairing etc. conditioner, or does it not really matter?

Hi

I wash my hair with baking soda only. I stopped using commercial shampoos ages ago. Anything that contains

the foaming agents Sodium Laurel Sulphate, Sodium Laureth Sulphate, etc are real bad for seb derm.

Most shampoos you can buy contain too may harsh chemicals and some believe that sulphates can

cause skin conditions, they are even used in labs as skin irritants. You may find it useful to read up

on the subject.

Thanks for your imput. The shampoo I'm using works well as it is medicated and contains no SLSs, which I agree are bad for not only seb derm, but also skin in general. I'm not sure using only baking soda would be suitable for me, due to the pH-balance issues.

I'm really after some suggestions on conditioner(s) to try, but thanks anyway smile.png

Im hoping someone on this SD thread can answer this for me. I am convinced I have SD as my skin has large huge pores that clog with dead skin despite using BHA's or AHA's to unclog them. I also have rosacea as well and my skin is dry and flakey yet has an oily film on it. I have slight dandruff and my forhead flakes as well as my eyebrows. I also get a rash on the sides of my face that resemble red sporadic dots spread around this area. Sounds totally like SD right? So the naturopath I had been seeing did a test on my stool twice now and both times it came back negative for yeast overgrowth. Im so confused as I thought SD was related to Candida and yeast and feel my symptoms are classic SD. I changed my diet a year ago but never achieved the results I was hoping for with my skin. I feel I am worse now than a year ago when I was eating anything I wanted. Now my diet is pretty clean..Brown rice cereal for breakfast or a Kashi one with Almond Milk or Coconut Milk, coffee (my vice), lunch is salads with chicken or avocados with black beans, and my dinner is a meat and fresh veggies. I have brown rice or quinoa several times a week as my carbs and this week I had buckwheat pancakes made with rice milk. I do slip up and have a gluten free cookie occasionally and I love Luna Bars. The sugar is like 8g in the luna bars but its my only treat. I take fish oil daily, a good probiotic, zinc and alpha lipoic acid. I dont take any anti fungals daily but will sometimes cook with coconut oil. So how come I feel like I have SD but I got a negative test, is that possible?

From the British Journal of Dermatology,

Seborrhoeic dermatitis is not caused by an altered immune response to Malassezia yeast

I haven't read the entire thread (just the first couple pages), but I'd just like to say that I have mild SD in the creases of my nose and on my forehead (developed a few years after ending my successful accutane treatment). Because of this, I've NEVER been able to wear foundation (not like that's a huge problem, I'm just saying...lol). It always ends up a flaky mess.

Anyway, a few days ago someone on the first page suggested using BP. I had previously ordered some (5%) for my brothers's acne, so I had some lying around. Been putting it on in the evening (on my forehead and nose only) and I'm noticing a difference already. My skin is quite dry...And that would otherwise bother me, but the oily flakes seem to be going away and the texture of my skin is really smooth and not bumpy/rough like it had been. The redness around my nose (which made it look like I had been constantly blowing my nose) has faded almost completely.

Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. :)

This is what i have always believed. That is very interesting for sure and thanks

for sharing. A few things have come to light recently which may suggest that

they are actually making some headway into understanding and treating this

condition.

Hi,

So glad to hear that you are having some success in controlling your SD!! Do you think that by using your current

treatment that it will be successful in the long run and have you considered treating the SD internally by watching your

diet and/or taking supplements?? Thanks!!!
