Okay, I was diagnosed with Seborrhea a couple years ago. It's pretty mild. Light pink inner cheeks and nose. No patches because I wash skin daily with manuka honey. Whenever I drink alcohol (mostly any beer), get really nervous/anxious, take a hot shower (but not every single time) or am outside in the cold weather, my nose will start to feel like..pressure and kind of like a throbbing and then it gets really red. It gets to my inner cheeks too a bit. It usually lasts up to a half hour-hour depending. What do you think this flaring/flushing is? Is it the Seborrhea, Rosacea or something else?
You do have common symptoms of rosacea but unfortunately rosacea is one of the hardest things to diagnose.
For the seb derm, washing your face with ant-dandruff shampoo (a nickname for seb derm is face dandruff) should help, a lot of people have good results with Nizoral. At night, apply hydrocortisone and clotrimazole cream, mix in a 1:1 ratio. Some people also have good results with using Borax as a facewash, but Borax isn't meant for the skin so consult a doctor first
Personally, when I had seb derm I used Nizoral, Borax and the 2 creams and it took about 4-5 months to completely go away, fortunately it never came back.
how do you do the borax solution? Ive tried everything but that. My most recent was an oil comprised of essential oils like lavender, jojoba, tea tree, sandlewood, coconut and some others but i cant remmber right now. It was from trustnature.com and was called Derm Essentials...sounded like a great product but unfortuantely didnt do squat. I use Borax in my laundry to wash clothes but how do you use as a facewash?
I have similar reactions, and I believe that it's a histamine response. The adrenal glands produce histamine, which basically the body trying to calm down the sensation of itching. The histamine response is part of our primitive "fight or flight" reaction to stress.
I also believe that a decrease in temperature changes the quantity or quality of sebum production, and then the malassezia fungus that causes seborrhoeic dermatitis flares up, probably because the immune system is suddenly able to recognize the fungal colonies.
No medical research has made an investigation into either of my observations, but my experience supports these observations. Thanks for posting your experiences. Is there anyone else with similar observations?
Rosacea is different from seb derm. I never tried borax but if it works for you, great, but I suspect it is more of a rosacea treatment because it has a pH of 8.
Salicylic Acid (SA) is better for treating seborrhoeic dermatitis, just don't use SA on your hair because SA has a very low pH -- it will make your hair strawlike, (skin has a pH of about 5 but hair has a pH of about 7) and don't use it if you have dark skin because it may cause hyperpigmentation where melanin becomes concentrated. Low pH, about 5, is a very important basis for treating seborrhoeic dermatitis in my experience. For example, if you mail order Nizoral shampoo to use as a body wash, you should add SA or any other medium strength acid to lower the pH.
Look here, for a review I wrote of all our non-prescription options, and my experience with home compounding effective anti-fungal treatments.
If you like manuka, maybe try kanuka, especially Barrier Island Gold -- http://www.barriergold.co.nz/ from Shop New Zealand. The Maori say that manuka is the female tree and kanuka is the male tree, so I use both essential oils.
Youre absolutely right iggysob. I should have written, The inflammatory skin reaction causes a histamine response, which is basically the body trying to calm down the sensation of itching. Histamine also stimulates the adrenal glands, causing a release of adrenaline and noradrenaline, which is part of our primitive 'fight or flight' reaction to stress."
However, I'm still curious, if anyone else has similar observations concerning nervousness, anxiousness, skin tingling when taking a hot shower, and flaring/flushing from seb derm.
