I recently went to the doctor and was told I had rosacea.  They prescribed  Metronidazole gel 1% once daily. It™s  been three weeks.  I don™t feel like my skin Has improved instead I believe it to be worse.  It seems to be dry and flaky and itches. I have these tiny bumps but they are  definitely not pimples . It™s only around my nose and is now starting to spread to my mouth.  I™m a cash patient so going back to be reevaluated right now is hard for me.  Is it truly rosacea or is something else the culprit?  Any advice would be much appreciated.

You 99% likely have fungal acne, NOT rosacea. Signs of fungal acne are spreading redness and pimples (the fungus spreads with hyphae), dry and flaky skin and lack of response to treatments that do not target fungal problems. Metronidazole makes fungal acne worse as it is a type of antibiotic NOT an antifungal treatment.

Doctors know nothing about skin fungal treatments.

Other symptoms can be a white tongue and/or dandruff. Do you have one or both of these ?

Fungal acne is usually caused by taking antibiotics or some other meds. Have you taken antibiotics or birth control pills ?

Fungal acne is fixed cheaply, safely and effectively by doing the following -

1. Buy some clotrimazole topical antifungal cream (often sold as Canesten and available without a prescription) and apply it to the affected areas 203 times a day. Topical antifungal creams are totally safe.

2. Wash your hair in an antidandruff shampoo, even if you do not have dandruff.

3. Do NOT apply any moisturisers or organic oils to the affected areas as these literally feed the fungus. Keep the affected areas very dry as fungus loves moisture.

4. STOP using the metronadizole gel as it will make the problem worse, as you have found.

The above treatments, which are completely safe, will 99% likely fix your problem in 1-2 weeks.

I would not waste your money going back to a doctor, as they do not understand fungal problems, and the solution is cheap and safe and available without prescription - see above. Doctors make fungal acne worse by prescribing the wrong meds.

I am happy to hear back from you.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my post. Lots of good information. I am fortunatenot to have dandruff or white tongue. I do take birth control pills and haverecently been on antibiotics. Could be the link. I also have been using more moisturizers productswhich also could have triggered the spread. Ill be visiting my local drug store in the morning. Thanks again!

Thanks Harley

Let me know how things go with using the antifungal cream/s and anti-dandruff shampoo plus NO moisturisers (which absolutely could have triggered the spread. They should clear the problem (at least in part) in 1-2 weeks.

You could buy some terbenafine anti-fungal cream (often sold as Lamisil) and apply that together with the clotrimazole cream.

If you do have rosacea rather than fungal acne (which I doubt) the the simplest and best treatment for rosacea is topical use of scabies cream (permethrum) because rosacea is caused by mites.

But I think you have fungal acne.

Fungal acne is caused by taking antbiotics and/or birth control pills (plus a few othe meds).

If you can, I suggest you stop taking birth control pills as they will be making the problem worse.

Also, only take antibiotics for serious bacterial infections. Antibiotics reduce the body's immune system, and this allows the fungus to fungus invade because the reduced immune system cannot "fight it".

Thank you so much for the advice! I never knew fungal acne existed!I cut the moisturizers out immediately. I started on the anti-dandruff shampoo and the clotrimazole cream (2X daily). I must say since the weekend I cant believe the difference! It is definitely helping! My skin is already starting to smooth out. The redness has even calmed down and the patches have gotten noticeably smaller. Thank you!!!
