Red Scars?

Hey,

I suffered from acne from the age of 12 and I'm now 16, thanks to doxycycline and benzoyl peroxide it has faded dramatically of 2 years, although I do still get a few spots here and there they and much less painful and on a much smaller scale (considering I had to go to A&E because a spot swelled up my entire left side of my face) and I really only get 2 or 3 now :)

Anyway, although the acne itself has faded it has left me with red skin literally all over my face apart from the outlines of my face, sides of my forehead and around my eyes. There are a few areas where there are red dots but mainly my face is just red. I think that time is the only thing that can heal it because it has improved slightly in a year, but there must be something to speed up the process! I've tried the whole lemon juice thing and it just irritated my skin and made it all itchy so that's a no go... but is there a cream or something that I can buy or receive from my doctor considering i'm in the UK? Would you recommend skin lightening products?

I'm just so confused I have no idea how to get rid of this annoying redness!

Hiya!

Unfortunately this sounds like erythema which is very common amongst us acne sufferers. It's not permanent but you are correct, it does take a long time for it to resolve on its own. You could try to speed it up with Niacinamide and a Retinoid/Retinol but lightening products will yield no results as it's not a problem with your melanin levels.

If you're of very fair skin, like me (grr!) the erythema will be more obvious and may even persist for longer. But don't despair!

Niacinamide has helped my erythema from my Fraxel treatments (that were over a year ago now) and has helped a recent nasty burn on my arm heal nicely too. It's gone from being beet-red to pink in 4 weeks. Retiods/Retinol will help too as it speeds your skin cell turnover and will help your body promote new skin more quickly.

Hope this helps! Might be worth doing a bit of research on erythema. 🙂

Hey 🙂

thanks a lot for the advice and yes i have very pale skin so the redness is very visible... anyway I did do some research on erythema but all the pictures that came up seemed very extreme in comparison to what my skin looks like but I presume all cases aren't as extreme as to what google came up with haha, anyway I might bring erythema up with my doctor and get his opinion on what to do 🙂

just want this all gone! so irritating angry.png ugh!

thanks again! 🙂
