Side Effects of RF Micro Needling vs. Erbium Yag Laser vs. CO2 Laser

Hey there!

I am new to this forum and look for a solution to treat my acne scars (box and ice pic). I suffered from acne during puberty which has been treated with oral doses of Isotretinoin / Roaccutan (at that time there were no Vitman A based cremes on the market as far as I remember)

My aim is to improve my scars + get rid of some of my wrinkles on the forehead which are quite big for my age because I have a highly expressive face (+ maybe raise my eyebrows which quite low and everyone tells me I look tired even if I am not).

I am looking for something with the lowest possible side effects because I read a lot about some Horror stories on the Internet which the doctors usually do not tell you. At the end I do not want to get my skin worse than before (hypergipmentation, discolor, less collagen in the skin than before).

One dermatologist suggested at least 3 Erbium Yag Laser treatments + Botox in the Forehead. I even had a little test treatment with the Erbium Yag Laser on a small are to see if I get side effects (which I did not, so I guess this is safe for me).

The second dermatologist suggested some sessions of RF Micro Needling (Intracel) + optional CO2 Laser.

At the moment I think RF Micro Needling would be the best solution but I saw some reviews on realself.com where some women got worse skin through RF micro needling than before, so I am unsure if it is really safe

I hope you can help me out and thanks for reading! Attached are some photos

Hi there, I don't see any ice picks in the circled areas. Are you thinking large pores there are icepicks? Most men have this irregularity on their skin, perhaps I cannot see it in the pics provided.

I don't know how old you are but I can guess from the facial features. If you want to work on forehead lines acne scar treatment is not needed, simply go get botox. Many people do this for aging or"muscle lines."

Botox has little side effects unless a dr is careless, this is less than a percentage of all procedures.

Hey beautifulambition,

thanks a lot for your quick answer! I thought my large pores are ice pic scars due to the acne.

Okay so I should not panic too much to possible side effects. Since I did not see many positive reviews about the Erbium Laser I would maybe try first some sessions of RF micro needling and ask the Dr. for Subcision. If it does not improve I would try Erbium or CO2 (probably Erbium first) and if I still wont be happy add Botox which I heard from the Doc is better to be done after the skin treatments (and will hopefully not make my eyeslids drop even more).

I can post some pic updates if someone is interested

@HorstiYou won't see many good reviews in general if your looking on real self. Often they are not under the laser name but scar treatments etc. Many times Dr's push the wrong device or treatment for the patient or the patient has unreal expectations and are sold perfection without down time.

Ok that could be a plan, we always do manual methods like subcision first before energy devices.

@beautifulambition

Is RF Microneedling safe to be done by a comsetician? I could not find a derm who would offer it

Furthermore the cosmetician offers RF Microneedling only with Secret RF which has no insulated needles(compared to Infini) According to Google this is worse safe than isolated needles. Is it still worth a try,

Which should be the maximal needle depth for a conservative approach?

@HorstiCan be yes, ... check how many they have done, should be hundreds if not thousands, ask about settings, discuss how many cases she has done for acne scars before. If they are fully trained they can be ok. On this device even Dr's sometimes have their staff do the treatment. As you are Caucasian, uninsulated needles may not be as big of a deal though insulation is better. Expect longer down time, some redness which won't be bad. If you heal poorly do insulation. She can always do a test area before the full treatment.

Depth so much isn't your issue especially in the temples as there isn't much fat there. They simply cannot go to deeply here.
