I have acne now again and its very frustrating. I have went to dermatologist before back many years ago when my acne was bad and i finally cleared it up using facial products i bought. It seemed like any dermatologist always do the same thing, prescribe you some antibiotic or some benzoyl peroxide.
I been trying to treat myself and that isn't working though that worked for me back a few years ago. I guess the products i use now are not effective anymore.
Has anyone been to a dermatologist where they actually helped clear their acne? I feel like going there is a waste of time. I dont have insurance and will pay out of my own pocket but i dont care. The thing is i know they aren't going to do anything different and tell me something i don't know.
Am i right or wrong with this? Like if they go and prescribe a cream thats probably Benzoly peroxide. Or antibiotics. And i read lot of ppl say never go on antibiotics for acne as its horrible for it.
Thoughts?
Not all dermatologist's are a waste of time, however try to find one that enjoys treating acne. Some really are only interested in skin cancer but treat acne as well, so they aren't as good at the acne part of it, imo.
If you haven't tried The Regimen yet though, you might give it some serious consideration. It works very well. http://www.acne.org/regimen
Okay to those of you who went and see a dermatologist, what do they usually tell you and precribe you? Do most just give you antibiotics? I heard taking these is a horrible idea.
When i went to a few back years ago, all they did was prescribe me a cream on my face and it didn't do nothing for it.
Also, im very worried about trying any cream that might prescribe b/c im worried things would get worst.
Also is it true once you stop taking it, then your skin gets worst? I heard a lot about this online where you take antibiotics and if it does help, once you stop then you get more breakouts.
Also, im not sure if my acne is hormonal or not, i have to assume it is, but are these 2 pills u talk about for hormonal?
I read a lot of advice on acne.org that said never ever go on antibiotics from lots of ppl...
Also is there always an initial breakout or purging when you take these pills first before the skin gets better?
My suggestion is to do your research thoroughly to try and find one that specializes in acne treatments. Most, unfortunately, do not look at acne as something of great concern, unless of course it is severe. There are many wonderful informational research sites that can help you find a derm to meet your skin care needs...
I'm on my fourth derm (not by choice, I move a lot). But I do find some much more compassionate and invested in me and my case than others. Some are more focused on other parts of dermatology. Personally I think it takes more than one appointment with a derm for them to understand your skin, your goals, and in general your situation. You have your skin everyday, they are only seeing it for a couple of minutes. I always write down important things about my skin (sensitivities, previous rx/otc topicals or pills I've tried) and also include a timeline when I see a new derm so they can get to know me a little better.
And about the antibiotics, I tried them twice. Acne was sort of suppressed when I was taking them but I came back when I stopped. My derm didn't recommend a third try. Not good to take antibiotics for as long as I did because of the possibility of becoming resistant.
I would try out the Regimen using OTC products and if it doesn't help you (give it three months) and if your skin does not improve, definitely check out a dermatologist who has good reviews from their acne patients!
i'm sorry to hear about your struggle with acne i started getting it all over my body due to Antibiotics of all things. I believe it was really caused by what the antibiotics do to most people. They kill absolutely everything good and bad, and then you can develope CANDIDA. Google that word. You may be surprised at the similar symptoms. I was! Honestly, things like apple cider vinegar topically and drinking everyday really seemed to help quick. it does burn so be careful and dillute it. However, i would save my money! Hope this helps!!
My dermatologist hates to give me antibiotics. I used to go to another doctor in her office, and he had me on spiro, but then I started to go to her and she took me off of it. Which I was kinda pissed about cause my skin was perfect. She now prescribes me vitamins and they're awesome. I actually never really heard of anyone else's doctor prescribing them vitamins for acne, but honestly, they work just as good as Spiro did for me, and I have no side effects and since they're vitamins, you don't become immune to them like you do to antibiotics. I really actually love my dermatologist! She has helped my skin so much. and she's really honest with me too. I one time asked her about some laser procedure they do in her office because my friend's sister goes to her and had it done, and she told me that I didn't need it, and instead I did a skin rejuvenation thing that is like half the money, and that's also helped my skin too! So yes dermatologists are worth it when you find the right one. I went to two different ones before her, and honestly, they weren't worth it. They were both nasty and looked at my skin for two mins and prescribed me an antibiotic and I went on my way. She takes her time and talks to you, and honestly, half the time she gives me tips on things that probably takes away money from her.
