Hi,

How do you tell the difference between these? They all have similar traits. I sometimes get a painful red lump on my lip that has a whitehead but I can't pop it. I also get like a red pimple I'm he crevasse of my chin slightly to the side but it doesn't scab or show a whitehead just a big red lump.

Then other times I get in the same sort of crevasse area a big lump that sometimes scabs a bit on top of the lump. Sometimes it can be two lumps combining together. I get tingling on y face but it's hard to keep track of how soon these appear after those areas of my face are tingling.

Any help would be really great.

Thanks!

Hi -

Pimples, including the nodular-cystic kind, can form pretty much anywhere on your face, including around your lips. A pimple that has formed around the lips might LOOK like a cold sore to someone else, but pimples and cold sores feel completely different.

Pimples that form heads typically start off as a red spot that becomes inflamed and forms a small head. Since the area around the lips have alot of nerve endings, these pimples can be particularly sore. A nodule or cyst often starts off as a bump under the skin that becomes extremely inflamed and sore to the touch very quickly (these are the "under the skin" pimples people sometimes refer to. It may or may not form a head. The healing time can vary depending on the inflammation of the pimple.

Cold sores will typically start directly on the lip, or at least very close to the lip. They may start off as a small red spot that feels tingly. Once the tingle happens, the cold sore begins to progress very rapidly (within hours or even minutes) into small fluid filled blisters called vesicles. The area around the sore should feel incredibly itchy and sometimes painful (but more of a burning pain than a thobbing pain like a pimple). Within a day or so the blisters will usually pop (you should never EVER pick them yourself) and crust over. Note - it is during this period that you are most contagious. The sore usually takes about 2 weeks to heal.

It sounds like the areas around your chin are pimples, and the spot by your lip that feels tingly and scabs over is probably a cold sore.

Thanks for the reply,

I think after these ones go I am going to apply a coldsore cream regularly and see if that works.

I see you use cetaphil, do you not think it makes your skin look to shiny and greasy? It was great for absorbing though. I just started using cerave just the general one, not am or pm. This may be why I broke out but could be a number of reasons.

New one just to the side of my mouth. Little spot came up, applied BO, new Huge spot came up. They seemed to have formed together to make one super lump. Couple of yellow heads, definitely some sort of tingling/burning/ stinging but more as I noticed it forming.

It's annoying my skin would be ok if I didn't keep getting these, need to find out what they are and how to prevent them.
