Is it normal to have initial breakout with bc pills, where your acne gets a lot of worse than it was before? How common is it for it to get worse before it gets better? And if you've had that happen to you, how long did it take to finally work? Thanks. I'm talking bc pills that are good for acne, like Yasmin, Yaz, or Diane.

Hi sweety.

I went on YAZ in 2011. It caused horrible break outs for the first three months the time my body adjusted to the hormones. Then my skin was flawless during the time I took YAZ.

When I decided to stop the pill, my skin broke out horribly and ever since... well I'm dealing with it every day ! =(

So I decided this year to go back on the YAZ, I'm on my third month. Like the first time, dealing with break outs and praying it will eventually help my skin like it did back in 2011 !!!!

Thanks for sharing! I'm going through the same thing right now only on Diane. I tried Yaz before for 2 months but couldn't stand the breakout and painful cysts everyday so I stopped after month 2. I decided to try again with Diane, but it's very discouraging so far. Again, painful cysts almost every day, worse than ever before. Thing is, I took BCP in my teens and never had an "initial breakout". On the opposite, it started getting better right away. Sigh, hormones are so confusing.

Just look at it this way. What ever you try, give your body 3 months before giving up on it. Switching birth control pills so suddenly will really mess up your hormones. I know you're just trying to find a pill that works quickly but all birth control pills contain different dosage of hormones. It's hard to deal with I know!! On YAZ right now, I have 3 cysts on both cheeks and I feel so hopeless!

Yeah, tell me about it. I feel so scared about having to deal with scars after this. Not to mention the hassle of having to put on layers of makeup just to go grocery shopping...

I can totally relate. I've been battling cystic acne since I was 13 and i'm now 25. I know that birth control is only a temporary solution. As soon as I'm off them, I get cysts everywhere!!!!! I really hope i'll win the battle soon. Even life with my boyfriend is hard because my self esteem is crushed=(

Yaz kept me clear for two years. Slowly it stopped working. I was advised to take a higher dose of spiro (which is what Yaz has) along with Yaz. I decided not to. I'm breaking out as well. This is my first month off of it. Some people say 4 month is when they start experiencing acne. I started two weeks after. I took a break from Yaz for 3 months and thought it was bc of that. I went back on and stayed on for a year and it wasn't working like it used to.

It took me three-four months to start seeing results.

So is mine. I feel so insecure now I actually avoid talking or hanging out with my husband at home unless I'm wearing makeup. What a nightmare. Every morning I'm terrified to look in the mirror because I know I might get new cysts.

I noticed the same thing. I only took Yaz for 7 months longest, but I was already noticing the effectiveness deteriorating. Did it ever make it worse before it made it better though?

Yes it does get worse before it gets better. Wait 3-4 months. It took 4 months for me. Then I stopped getting cysts just deal with the scarring after. It was great for almost 2 years then somehow it just stopped.

I'm also 25, this sucks. :(

I really hope I can last till then. I'm 21 now. I never even had cystic acne until after I quit Yaz. I always had acne but it wasn't that bad. I took it for 7 months or so just for contraception. After that I wanted a break, but within months I began getting horrible cystic acne. I was 19. So I forced to go back on. And ever since then I feel trapped in this cycle. Going off the pill, getting a shitstorm on my face, Going on the pill, face getting worse. I've been hopping like that for the past 5 months.

Most people get initial breakouts on any new birth control - people who don't are the rare and lucky ones. It took me 5 months on Diane before my skin finally started clearing up, not to say that it'll take you just as long. Most people take around 3-4 months to achieve visible results. Also, just because you never had an IB a few years ago doesn't mean you won't now. Your hormone levels are going to be different, and if you've been on again off again with BCP for the past 5 months, your hormones are probably all over the place because your body hasn't had time to adjust.

Thanks, that's reassuring. I'm gonna try and stick with it, I really hope it works soon. I'm also taking zinc and cyclodynon every morning http://www.clarksnutrition.com/shop/product_view.asp?id=108856&StoreID=d9339nk282s92nv700akhlbd3lhf7nv2&private_product=0

I tried fish oil but got freaked out each time I broke out on it thinking it caused it.

I keep hearing about DIM and people who had decent success with it, but it seems like there hasn't been enough research on that yet, so I don't know if I want to put that in my body without knowing all the possible consequences

So, I had to switch from Diane to Yaz after 1 month and 5 days into the new cycle due to the scary side effects. I'm now 5 days into Yaz and 10 days into the second cycle, and so far my skin is pretty much the same as last month. Breaking out about twice a week all over my face, temples, cheeks, chin, forehead. Is that normal with initial breakout? I've also changed my diet for the past 2 weeks, been eating much less beef, more fruit and veggies, almost completely cut out chocolate and never eat any other candy, but that seemed to so far have no effect on my skin (as i expected).

Since I switched to Yaz, does this mean my body has to adjust all over again and I'm back to square one with 3-4 months of nightmare ahead?

Hang in there!! Hopefully it won't take another 3-4 months. It sounds like you cleaning up your diet is a great plan, this will absolutely aid in healing and keeping inflammation down within your body. It won't cure or clear you overnight, but anything you can do right now to be good to the inside of your body will benefit you in the long run. Staying away from dairy, sugar and gluten can be very helpful until you can find balance and slowly reintroduce foods that might be okay with your body.

I'm on the Spiro, Yasmin hormonal acne battle myself. Stay strong girl, you are not alone by any means!!!

Does Yasmin cause the IB like Yaz does? I did not have an IB when I went on Diane but I did have a short one on Spiro.

Well I can't say what caused my IBs. I started Spiro a few weeks before Yasmin this time around and things were not pretty week 3-4 breakout wise. I was on another BC before Zovia 35. I've been on BC for about 16 years and never noticed any initial breakout either starting, switching, etc. I don't recall the first time taking Yasmin any IB because I had cystic acne to begin with, I don't remember dealing with anything worse than I already had. This time around before Spiro, Yasmin and Doxy I was definitely clearer before, more inflammed and persistent. This time its all coming out, first IB was inflammatory then the 2nd was small bumps all around cheeks, jaw and chin. But I have to say tonight, after washing my face I felt like I am turning the corner. Hopeful and that's all we can have is hope and some faith in medicine.

That's a good point, if you're concerned about an IB, you could temporarily go on antibiotics for a short time only. The problem with antibiotics is that many people use them as a long term treatment and that causes all sorts of issues.
