Hi-

My doctor gave me spiro 100 daily for my acne..
I've never been on this medication and I've heard some horror stories about spiro that it causes major weight gain.
And I am very concerned...

1. Does Spiro cause weight gain? or weight loss?
2. If weight gain, why does that happen? Shouldn't diuretic cause weight loss?

Please help me...
Weight gain is something I never want.

Hi, yes it certainly can but not usually more than 5-15 lbs. From what I understand, estrogen = more fat cells so lowering male hormones, which is what Spiro does, raises the effects of estrogen. I'm oversimplifying but... The good news is its generally in your butt and boobs. I'm having breast tenderness.
i think of you continue to eat healthy and exercise you will have no or minimal weight gain.
I know it's not ideal but Ill take s few extra pounds and clear skin over acne any day.
Some people have no weight gain. Like birth control its all pretty much how each person reacts to the med.

I started spironolactone earlier this year for my severe cystic acne. My acne is so bad that it disfigures my face. I was on the med for about 6 months. I noticed some weight gain a few months later but didn't really think much of it, plus I had clear skin for the first time in 15 yrs!! But then the weight started to become more rapid. It came to a point where I was gaining 10 lbs every 2 weeks. My eating habits and physical activity never changed. So I decided to stop taking it. Its been about a month already since I stopped. I have gained 40 lbs within the 6 months of taking it. I am overweight now and am very depressed from this. I have lost 5 lbs so far. Has anyone ever experience weight loss after stopping this med?? If so how long does it take to get back to pre-med weight? I have always been obsessed with my weight and having clear skin but I guess I prefer being skinny with acne than the other way around. The weight gain is too much.
