I have been lurking on Acne.org posts for a few years now, and it is about time for me to share my thoughts and experiences.
I am 27 years old, Asian male who has suffered severe acne and oily skin since I was 16 years old. I tried all the well-known solutions in the States (e.g. Proactiv, Murad, Differin, Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic Acid, etc.). I tried almost all of the anti-acne brands at Walgreens and CVS. I bought all the prescribed drugs and meds by my dermatologist.
So from 16 to 22, it was a fight. But ultimately my acne persisted and I was developing plenty of acne scars. Well, I have to say that the only drug I have not tried is Accutane, which I deeply regret. This is because after 4 months of 40mg a day with accutane, I was completely clear of acne and my skin was normal. The only thing left was the acne scars.
My derm wanted me to take more than 40mg a day but I didn't because I read about low-dose isotretinoin treatment is as effective as the higher dose sans the extreme side effects.
Anyways, long story longer... After 4 months of taking 40 mg a day, I began to experiment of doing 20mg x 7 days for every month. I just wanted my oily skin at bay. It freakinworked like magic. My skin was normal and I felt great. I did this for 4 months until I ran out. Once I stopped, oily skin came back with a vengeance.
I went back again to this cycle for 1 year until I stopped in 2016. I figured that there are not any scientific studies done on this type of treatment for oily skin. Nevertheless, there are plenty of anecdotal stories in Asia where doctors would prescribe low dose accutanefor oily skin. Talked to a few people who are doing this long-term.
I care about my health in the long run BUT my oily skin is ruining my present. I guess 20mg x 7 days for a month ain't too bad? I could even try 10mg x 7, if it makes a difference.
Any thoughts?
I'm doing 10mg a day for 2 years now.
Yeah, the oil is gone and it's a life changer. BUT, there are drawbacks : Skin is a lot more sensitive and thin(redness more easily), lips always very dry and i'm sweating a lot more easily.
I'm considering doing 10mg every other day and take B5 as a complement.
Sorry for my English btw.
Hey @WarrantedAide
Thanks for your sharing your experience. Did you do any blood test to check how your system is?
I think the sensitivity and redness depends on the skin type. Because my skin was perfectly fine when i did the low-dose. Although my problem was also the lip. It was indeed very uncomfortable because of extreme dryness.
Did you have any acne problems or you are just taking it for the oiliness?
I did bloodtest and everything was fine.
Yeah, sadly i have a very white skin so very sensitive to redness.
I had basically no acne but some black dots, and an incredibly oily skin. So yeah, accutane really changed my life, but it's pretty sad to kill your girlfriend a certain way because you dont want a rednose while 12 hours after the kisses ;(
