One of the less effective treatments out there. It should never be used on its own or for longer than 3 months and may lead to resistant strains of bacteria. It may provide a slight improvement in mild acne in some people.

Pros:

it cleared up most of my acne.

Cons:

it dried out my face to the point of peeling. it made me extremely sensitive to the sun. my skin was constantly tight and dry.

this will clear up most acne, but the price you pay is not worth it. it made my skin so dry that i was constantly peeling, like a sunburn. it was painful and tight. i became extremely sensitive to sunlight. it also smells pretty bad.

Pros:

Works well and dries quickly (Reduced the amount of acne I had, and seems to be helping prevent new ones)

Cons:

Smell (it's like a mix of rubbing alcohol and rubber)

Bleaches clothes and sheets. Don't expect your pillow covers to retain the same color. Use the same ones (wash them regularly of course) so you don't constantly ruin new sheets.

Made my skin dry and irritated some parts of my face (itchiness)

I used this in addition to EpiDuo and it definitely helped reduce my acne 10 fold. It feel cool when you apply to it, and I didn't really feel the stinging sensation others have mentioned. Other those side effect I think this worked really well

Works great for adult cystic acne
I am 45 years old and have been using this for about 5 years now. I also take spirinolactone (a pill) which helps with acne breakouts around the chin and mouth. I never had bad acne as a teenager, but as I approached my 40th b-day, I started to get these nasty cyst like pimples on my chin that hurt before you could even see anything. I went to the dermatologist and she prescribed Clindamyacin and Sprinolactone, these two together have almost completely cleared up my skin. I also use the Dermatologica line of skin care products which have also made a huge difference in my skin. I use their face wash, moisturizer, and an exfoliator 3 times a week (exfoliation is extremely important to get rid of the dead skin and oil and bacteria that get trapped in your pores). My skin has never looked better!

Pros:

Easy to use (especially the lotion.) I just use it at night and I don't have to worry about looking oily during the day.

Cons:

Not 100% perfect, but I will happily take 98%.

This product works really, really well for me. I've been using it for a few years, and it keeps my face clear of cysts nearly all of the time. Every once in a while one will get through, but it is mostly clear.

Pros:

Fast results
Cheap
Can wear under makeup
Non-drying

Cons:

My feel burning sensation upon application

I started Clindamycin treatment a little over a week ago. I apply it topically twice a day in conjunction with Benzoyl Peroxide. I know its still early into the treatment but I had to leave a review on the progress so far because I am so pleased with the results. It has cleared up my skin amazingly! I had terrible acne and blemishes that were so hard to control. First my MD put me on Tretinoin but it made my face so dry and peel like an onion. Then he switched me to Clindamycin and I love it! It completely takes away any painful inflammation. All of my pimples were about half their size two days later. My forehead is totally clear now and it was broken out just a few days ago. My skin is finally getting under control. Also, I tend to have extremely dry skin and this medication does not dry it out.

Great!
I was put on this for mild hormonal break outs. It has worked great! No drying. No side effects at all. I use it once in the morning and once at night. With in two days,I started seeing results. Now I continue to use it with very few new break outs. I have struggled for years...and who knew it was this simple to help my issue! I'm going to have my son use this now. I was the guinea pig...now that I know it works,I want him to use it also. Highly recommended to anyone having these same issues!

Works, but not for long - try Benzaclin instead
For the first 4-5 months I used this, I saw some (but not total) clearance of my moderate acne. However, around month 6 it seemed to completely stop working. My dermatologist encouraged me to stick with it for YEARS (in conjuction with other treatments), even though all it seemed to be doing was making my skin dry. Eventually, I stopped using it because it did not seem to be helping my acne at all. After the fact, I read research papers showing that acne bacteria starts to develop a resistance to this topical as early as 6 weeks into use. So, while you may see some clearance with this product, it will eventually stop working. However, I think it's worth noting that many studies have shown that benzoyl peroxide can prevent the emergence of antibiotic-resistant acne, so I would recommend trying Benzaclin. The combination of benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin should keep your skin from becoming resistant to treatment for much longer then the clindamycin alone.

Perfect for me!

Pros:

Cleared up instantly
Easy to apply
No side affects

As a teen I always had perfect skin. It wasn't until I had joined the Marine Corps that I started suffering from breakouts. It started off as small zits on my chin and then turned into moderate acne. I was so embarrassed to go in public. I started wearing more makeup than I ver had to try and even my skin out. But nothing covers bumps. My doctor tried birth control since she felt my acne was due to hormone changes an stress I put on my body in the military. After that dis no good we tried benzoyl peroxide 10% cream and benzoyl peroxide 5% wash. My skin dried out and began to peel for months. We stopped the cream and started using Differen gel instead, as well as oral doxy. My skin did clear up mostly, but then I began to breakout on my back and chest. I added regular face wash from drug stores, and could barely keep it under control. Finally we decided to try clindamycin phosphate solution. I just wash my face with the benzoyl, and roll it on every night and morning. In three days I have seen a 95% clear up! I roll the solution on my back and chest, and nearly every pimple/zit has cleared!!! It may not work for everyone, but it was worth a chance!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
