Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Produces similar results to the two other topical retinoids, tretinoin and adapalene, which means only partial clearing, and comes with far more sensitivity and side effects when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer and don’t be surprised if it’s too much for your skin to take.

Pros:

Good for oily skin
Smooth skin when not purging

Cons:

Redness
Severe Breakouts

This was the wrong medicine for me. I've battled acne from the age of 13. I'm now 55 and my derm thought this would help my breakouts. I began breaking out during week 5 and stayed with it because everything thing I read said it would get worse and to give it a good twelve weeks. After the twelveth week my face was still broke out and the pimples were inflamed and red. So much so that I hadn't experienced that kind of breakout in years. I went back to my derm and she told me to stop. I gave this a good try and believe me it was tough cause I so wanted it to work for me. Word of advice, if this does not work after twelve weeks please go back to your derm. So sadly disappointed!

Pros:

Clears up 99% of acne!

Cons:

You have to frequently use moisturizer because it dries your skin out.

I had very persistent acne and this worked for me when no other product did.

Pros:

I have used this product on my back before and it's still clear 3years later. It works very well. I am now using it on my face and neck. I have used it about 2months now. Pros are smooth face and getting rid of clogged pores.

Cons:

My face feel tight sometimes and I have had some dryness. The dryness is mostly around the mouth area. Be careful not to put it close to your eyes or lips. Cons are initial breakout period pretty bad.

This product can be extremely drying. The key is to use a moisturizing cleanser and lotion. I use Oil of Olay oil free sensitive skin cleanser and Cetaphil lotion for all skin types fragrance free. I wash my face and moisturize right after and 20min. later use a dime size amount of tazorac. My dryness has been very minimal. Also, I started out 2weeks of every 2 days, 2 weeks of every other day and then started applying every day. You have to get your skin adjusted to the medication slowly to avoid the peeling, redness and dryness. I have very little of all 3. Good luck and be patient. A good coverage makeup without dryness is dermablend. Don't use any other acne washes or medications while using this. It does the job by itself.

Pros:

raised spots flattening. faster healing time for new acne. less new breakouts. gets rid of deep zits that have been there for years.

Cons:

burning, redness and peeling.

i have tried tons of acne treatments in my life but none have been as effective as tazorac. i started using it when i got engaged and was freaking out because the waiting list to get into the dermatologist was 2 months and my wedding was a year away. my sister told me to try it in the meantime. i was so skeptical it would ever work (nothing ever does.) it took about 4 months to really notice a difference. the first month or two were terrible. the peeling and burning was horrific and i didnt want to show my face out in public. but, i stuck with it. after you get that out of the way, it should just get better from there. the key is, no matter how bad it gets DO NO PICK YOUR FACE. dont touch, peel, pop, or pick at your face. it makes it a billion times worse. just exfoliate in the shower and leave it alone. this product is great because it makes your skin layers shed until the very deep rooted centers of the zits come to the surface (the zits that always seem to come back)

Pros:

did smooth out skin texture
after initial breakout improvement was seen

Cons:

extremely drying
burned something awful

i only used tazorac for about a month, and at first i was happy with the results. there was some drying, and there was a really bad inital break out but i was expecting that. After awhile though my complexion did start to get better. As time went on, however, each application of the medication seemed to react less and less well with my skin. by the end, the burning was so bad that i would have to put ice packs on my face. I thought i was possibly allergic, but no other retinoids or similar products have given me that reaction.

Pros:

Cleared skin completely after 12 weeks.

Cons:

Takes the full 12 weeks to improve. Initial breakout is terrible. After about a week it clears it up but the next week you wake up with 7 to 10 new pus filled pimples every morning. dries skin.

This is a great product, it works great. You just have to give it time to work. It is well worth the wait and the breakout. During the breakout, don't be discouraged that its not working because it really is. Your body is reacting to the new substance and takes a while to get used to it. I recommend taking this with 125mg of Solodyn once a night. My skin looks better than ever!

Pros:

Seems to be working as a heavy duty exfoliant and in conjunction with benzoyl peroxide

Cons:

Takes a lot of adjusting to find the amount of product that works without making your face peel, itch or turn red. Acne does seem to get slightly worse before improving

I have battled acne my entire life but for the most part, OTC products have controlled it. Since turning 40, I am experiencing the worse case of cystic nodules on my chin and along the jawline. My Doc prescribed Tazorac to be used along with benzoyl peroxide each on alternating days. Well, as you can imagine, my face was raw, raw raw...and as painful as the nodules themselves. My skin peeled off in sheets and I couldn't get rid of the flakes or cover up the ruby red lesions...I swear I was about suicidal at this point....I stopped using everything on my face except Dove soap and Oil of Olay moisturizer/sensitive skin. When my face calmed down, I added a moisturizer with AHA to "eat" the remaining flakes. I then used Tazorac one night with a moisturizer chaser, the next night I use a thin layer of BP. Each morning I use moisturizer for sensitive skin (with sunscreen of course) or moisturizer with AHA if I have slight flakes. Seemed to have found the combo for me and see improve

Pros:

Renewed skin, no blackheads on treated area. I had some old acne scars for a few years that I thought I would have to have lasered off, this removed them in about 2 weeks!

Cons:

Horrible initial breakout period, redness and peeling of treated area

I have been using this about 6 weeks. 31yrs old, had acne issues my whole life, went away for many years, recently back. The first few weeks, your skin will get worse. However, the blemishes I did get were different than before and healed differently. This breakout period is over and the new skin looks great. You must stick with this and give it time to work, and use it correctly. I suggest using Cetaphil, but use the thicker cream that comes in a tube,This has completely offset the dry skin. a light exfoliation with a washcloth daily also hopes to remove the dead skin. For someone who is not a teenager using this product, I am happy with the results so far. The new skin is smooth, and a different texture than I have ever had. I will continue to use this product and post my updates.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
