Topical Retinoid
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Produces similar results to the two other topical retinoids, tretinoin and adapalene, which means only partial clearing, and comes with far more sensitivity and side effects when you first start using it. It probably won’t be a total game changer and don’t be surprised if it’s too much for your skin to take.

Pros:

Got rid of most whiteheads and blackheads. Reduced the severity of breakouts.

Cons:

Initial redness and peeling. Makes the skin very sensitive. Doesn't completely eliminate breakouts. Some whiteheads and blackheads return.

I started using this product about 9 months ago, when Clindamycin stopped working for me. I have had moderate acne since I was 13. At first, Tazorac was working wopnderfully, but after about a month, I had a huge breakout and my skin was peeling off in clumps. My face was all red. As my skin got used to it, the breakouts stopped and my face improved. However, for this last month I feel like the medication is loosing its effectivness as I'm starting to get mild breakouts, mostly whiteheads and blackheads, more frequently. I use 0.10% Tazorac every night and a moisturizer during the day. I was also on Minocin pills, but they did nothing for me.

Pros:

Clears the little bumps and helps to remove scars

Cons:

MAJOR PEELING!! Face can/will be in pain.

When my dermatologist gave this to me I started peeling so I stopped using it. My derm told me it was normal so I decided to give it a shot, and it really works. It peels more where my scars are which have started to clear. I have noticed a big improvement on the amount of scars I have on my cheeks and I have fewer bumps. Thankfully I get this thing for free because the military pays for my perscriptions.

Pros:

Tazorac is such a blessing in my life. I started it at the end of January and my skin is totally healing. I am writing to give encouragement to anyone just starting it - you must be patient and use a good moisturizer.

Cons:

It can really dry out your skin and make it a lot worse before it gets better, but it's so worth it. Be sweet and tender to your face. And use a great moisturizer. I love Egyptian Magic for dry spots and Toleriane by La Roche-Posay for moisturizing.

See the forest through the trees...meaning, know that any dryness or breakouts at the beginning will pass and is paving the way to clear skin. It works, and skin just keeps getting clearer and looking more and more lovely. The key is MOISTURIZER! and for any women out there, I have been working with a hormonal health doctor (Alyssa Vitti with Laughing Sage Wellness in NYC) and she had me start taking Saw Palmetto gel caps. this is typically an herb for men, but some women can't breakdown testosterone (which we also have) efficiently and thus, get acne. These gel caps are just HUGE in helping my skin to be healthy and clear. As well as for helping with mood swings, which I just don't get much of anymore. Try it - I noticed improvement within a week. This plus Tazorac and a few other lifestyle changes have really been very good for the health of my skin.

Pros:

After the first couple of weeks and with consistent usage, this medication is fabulous. After several patient months my skin looked better than it did before I began to break out.

Cons:

When I initially started using the medication it made my face very sensitive; it burned, turned red, and was extremely dry. The first couple weeks seemed to plunge my acne into overdrive, along with the SE it was an embarrassing combination.

I have moderate inflammatory acne with the occasional cyst that developed when I was 18. Tazorac coupled with Nicomide and Benzaclin has been the most effective treatment for me, by a long shot. Over the past 5 years I have tried glycolic acid, otc salicylic acid, 10%benz peroxide, sulfur, proactive, and cleocyn T. The bottom line is that you have to give this medication time to work, but it is well worth the wait and I would recommend it to anyone.

Anyone have any Tazorac???? Please!
Hey guys! My last sample of Tazorac is coming to an end :-( and unfortunately, I am uninsured until November-ish. Does any kind-hearted individual(s) have any Tazorac they are no longer using for sale?

CALL THE MANUFACTURER WHO MAKES IT (ALLERGAN) AND ASK FOR THE COUPON DEPARTMENT, 1-800-433-8871. THEY WILL ASK FOR YOUR NAME AND EMAIL ADDRESS AND WILL EMAIL IT TO YOU. THE FIRST WILL COST $10.00, SECOND REFILL $2.00, AND LAST REFILL WILL BE ZERO. I JUST TRIED IT AND IT WORKED. I AM SO HAPPY NOW!!!!

First few weeks on Tazorac suck
I'm 15 years old and have been using acanya and Tazorac for about 2 weeks. My acne isn't that bad but it still bothers me since I'm the only one of my friends who has acne. I've had acne for a little over a year now and I've been to three different dermatologist which nothing they gave me helped. When I first started to use Tazorac and acanya I only had acne on my left cheek and tiny bumps on my forehead. The first few days I saw improvement but now after using this product for 2 weeks I've gotten more acne all the right side of my face!! And I'm so angry about it!! And it keeps on getting worse each day. So far these products have done nothing but dry out my skin and cause more acne in places I've never had it. My dermatologist did say it will get worse before it gets better so maybe this is just the "purging phase" everyone's talking about. When I read other reviews , people saw improvement right away which really disappointed me when the same didn't happen to me. If you want to see improvement in your skin fast, I wouldn't recommend either of these products.

They say that it gets worse before it gets better for some.

Meh

Pros:

Cool blue face under black light
Gets rid of some whiteheads

Cons:

Dries skin out a lot
You become "blue face/smurf/Navi" after one game of laser tag

DO NOT PLAY LASER TAG WITH TAZORAC ON! That is, of course, unless you would like a glowing blue face. You can look like an alien and combat acne at the same time. This is only under a black light so don't you worry.

Pros:

fades acne marks
clears clogged pores
prevents new acne

Cons:

dryness
redness
price

Honestly, this stuff is a miracle cream. I more so use it for fading acne marks and clearing clogged pores and it works extremely well. I've used peels and nothing works as well as this stuff. I use the .05% and still can't really tolerate it every night or it will make my skin a bit flaky, but that's only temporary and pros definitely outweigh the cons. It is pricy, the tube I used to buy was $40 with insurance but now they've made a smaller tube and it costs $20, lasts a long time though.

Pros:

reduces oiliness considerably

Cons:

for the first month or so, skin is embarrassingly flaky followed by redness and severe irritation that makes putting on moisturizer painful

As someone with crazily oily skin, Tazorac has been a godsend. It's the only thing I've ever tried that actually works! Sure, the painful stinging and flakiness totally sucks but fades over time. I also use in conjunction with BP and prescription clindamycin so I can't really attest to Tazorac's acne-fighting abilities. But it's made a huuuge difference for me oil control-wise.

Pros:

Clears acne quickly
Reduces scars
Works good
Smooth skin

Cons:

Dries skin
Can be expensive

This product is not made to prevent future acne, it is dealing with the current acne you have. That is mainly how topical products work. I have had horrible acne since I was 14 and I am 25 now. STILL an ongoing battle.. Birth control (Ortho Tri-Cyclon Lo) works wonderfully. Although, I finally got off of it because I quit breaking out and sure enough it came back, so I got back on..and now it has not worked. Also the Doxycycline is great. Unfortunetly I'm very worn down on this issue, the scars and acne have taken a toll on my once gorgeous face. I wish I had the money for Accutane but more so I wish it would go away forever!!!! I'm too old for this. Lol.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
