Acne.org’s Real World Take
This topical retinoid medication provides partial relief at higher prescription dosages, but don’t look for complete clearing. Relatively affordable and comes with less side effects than tretinoin, the other affordable topical retinoid. As a bonus, it improves the look of skin and reduces fine lines and wrinkles a bit too.

Pros:

This medications wasnt greasy or oily or anything. It didnt leave my skin shiny after i applied it (unlike the regimen on acne.org did). Made my skin clearer and softer. Had big scars and they started disappearing and getting less inflamed.

Cons:

Leaves skin with a TIGHT feeling-kind of like how botox must feel- it leaves your skin tight and you cant move your face muscles much-but thats why i out it on at night.

This medication worked pretty well. i mean it completed its goal-which was for me to clear up my big red pimples, blackheads and whiteheads, and fade them away. pimples went way almost instantley, whiteheads disapeared altogether with blackheads, and my brown spots have started to fade. CLEAR SKIN HERE I COME!

Pros:

Takes about a month to see some results but it deffinetly works. I mean you guys have no idea how my self esteem improved and I'm just so happy THAT IT WORKS!

Cons:

Nothing really the first week I used I had peeling but not nearly as bad from when I used Retin-A and I used Retin-A for 3 months and the peeling NEVER went away. If you have good insurance it'll cover it.

It deffinetly works and if you wear make-up ad worried about peeling this is probalby your best bet. I read other reviews of their skin getting worse before it gets better but for me it got a lot better but I had a couple of more breakouts on the chin but the big ugly red bumps went away. And for me it really didn't last long...

Pros:

I found that if you globbed it on a zit it would get much better overnight, it cleared up all the ance on my cheeks.

Cons:

Doesn't get rid of all the acne. I didn't see the same results as everyone else did, at all.

Differin is expensive. ($30 for a tube) I've tried everything, and nothing has worked. I'll have clear skin one week, the I'll look like a pizza the next. Maybe that's just the way my face is. I've tried Acne-Free, The Wave, Stridex, Clearasil, and the Stress control stuff. I've yet to try Proactive or Skin ID. But, the pink grapefruit stuff worked pretty well. I'd try that. (:

Pros:

Worked VERY well - continued use is definitely minimizing scarring

Cons:

very expensive

After trying everything from strong benzoyl peroxide washes/creams and salicylic acid washes and creams, Differin made the difference for my son. He had moderate to severe cystic acne on his face with significant 'crusting'. His skin felt like really rough sandpaper. He used the .01% gel for a while and saw moderate results, so the doctor increased him to the .03% gel and what a difference! Not only are his breakouts gone, the reddish purple scarring is starting to decrease after just 3 months. The doctor tells us that continued to use will help to decrease the icepick scarring and the purplish cast to his skin but it will take at least 6 months to a year to see drastic results. I'm willing to stick with it - his skin has become very soft and smooth as a result of this medication. Stop wasting money on the TV ad products and invest in great dermatological care. The tube of differin gel lasts about 6 months.

Pros:

Lightweight

Cons:

Caused an increase in breakouts.

I don't recommend this product. I was having light - moderate hormonal acne before I tried this product. After 3 weeks, my face is an absolute mess. I give up.

Pros:

Brought all my acne down flat and stopped new acne from coming up, but only for a little bit.

Cons:

made my skin disgusting for 2 weeks, i assumed it was bringing all my acne in the future up. Then only after my skin being nice for about a week, my skin got terrible again. My skin must have become immune like it does with all other acne treatments.

After 2 weeks of making my skin 100x worse, my skin was nice for a week only to return to completely covered in acne, but i continued to use it for another week. I'm sure it must work for some people long turn... but my skin became immune:[

Pros:

I never had a bad acne in the past up until a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was just an allergy because I have a very sensitive skin and gets easily irritated.. It's been a week already and its getting worse. I finally have it checked by a derm..

Cons:

Derm advice me to apply Adapalene (Differin) 0.1% cream at night and AHA soap 3 times a day. So far it dries up my skin, a little itchy but adviced to put ice on it.. i can't use any power and i can't find any suitable moisturizer.

I really don't know if its already working, im using it for 3 days already... i know i can't expect immediate improvement on my case yet but hopefully it works in 2 weeks. I will try to stick to it and see how it works in 2 weeks.. The cream is quite expensive but I still can't say how effective it is since I have been just using it for 3 days.

Pros:

dosnt make skin red or burn doesnt dry out skin as bad as other products

Cons:

its takes a while to see good results dries out skin and makes your skin kinda sensitive

I saw ok results. It took about 3 months to see them though. I have acne under the skin rather than really red pus filled acne. Just little bumps everywhere. Helped with acne of my forhead and nose and one side of my face but still didnt get rid of the worst part. didnt do much for that part. But if your skin isnt that bad id give this a try. I guess my acne is too strong for this med.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
