Acne.org’s Real World Take
The nuclear option. It works reliably and provides long-term remission of acne, and even severe acne, in about ⅔ of people who properly take an adequate dosage. However, it permanently and irreversibly changes the skin and the body forever and users may experience long-term side effects for the rest of their lives. It’ll nuke it, but there is no going back.

Pros:

Easy to take, gets rid of oily skin (and hair), and most of all, it gets rid of acne!

Cons:

I got really bad eczema while on Accutane (my derm prescribed me some cream for that), some minor aches and pains, and nosebleeds. Also, Accutane left pretty bad scarring on my skin, in texture (indented scars, which I had never gotten before), and hyperpigmentation. Blood tests monthly.

Accutane changed my life. I had pretty severe acne that would cluster in groups on my face, as well as extremely oily skin. It was a really difficult time for me, so humiliating. I tried so many different things (including topical and oral antibiotics), and nothing worked for me. I felt hopeless until I got Accutane. It really started to work around month 3-4, after that my skin stayed clear until the end. I've been off it for a month and my skin is still clear, although it's oily again because I'm on Retin-A now. Although my skin is oily and I do still have a lot of red marks left, I'd gladly take this over acne anyday. Accutane saved my life!

READ THIS REVIEW
HELLO EVERYONE, If you're reading this, you're most likely struggling with acne and on accutane or deciding whether you should go on it or not. Well I'm here to tell you that its an incredibly difficult choice (obviously) but it is so incredibly worth it. Anyways this is going to be long but I'd like to share my story so that I can help others make a choice that can change their life for the better. In the beginning of high school, I would get occasional break outs. Nothing too serious, it didn't bother me that much. Once I hit my junior year of high school, my skin seemed to get so much worse within a matter of months. My first semester of junior year was spent going on pointless antibiotics and topical gels in order to fix my increasing problem. My cheeks had tons of spots, it seemed like no place was spared. While my acne was not the scarring/cystic type, I could not leave home without a face of foundation at least. My skin would bring me to tears, and I didn't like close up eye contact because I felt that it was incredibly noticeable. I always knew about accutane, but I had stayed away from it because of the things I had heard. Once summer began after my junior year, my skin improved a little from the sun exposure. However, I vowed that I would seriously consider accutane my senior year if my skin got worse after the summer. Sure enough, about a month into senior year the condition of my skin began to worsen once again. Now, I was still debating accutane. As many of you know, you cant drink any alcohol while on it and the side effects listed are quite terrifying. As a senior in high school, i wont lie, I went to parties regularly on the weekends and drinking just happened to be a part of my social life. I know it shouldn't have been this way, but that was why it was such a hard decision for me. Basically I decided to forgo parties with friends in order to have the clear skin that I always wanted. SO I began the whole process, the month long wait and the first blood test and whatnot. I began on 30 mg for my first month. Im a 5'7'' girl and I weigh about 130 lbs. After about two weeks, I noticed that my face wasn't producing as much oil. IT WAS AWESOME. My hair stayed clean for days. It was super great. So I saw small improvement from there on. For my second month and then the rest of my course of 5.5 months, I was on 60 mg/day. I didn't notice a big difference in side effects with the dosage increase. My side effects were manageable- there were only two things that really bothered me (besides not drinking). First of all after like 3 months my eyes were F**KED UP. I would wake up with eye gunk and they would be red all the time. People always thought i was stoned. IT WAS AWFUL' And secondly, my finger tips got extremely dry (weird as hell I know) - but yeah they looked wrinkly and it was so awful. So by the fifth month, my skin hit a new level of clear. It was crazy. It took five months to get there and then I took the pills for two more weeks after that. I was worried about stopping, but its been about half a year and my skin is in the same wonderful condition! The oil returned but the acne didnt. I feel like a brand new person. I want to tell everyone to at least try this drug if you're struggling. Also to any girls- I suggest birth control. I started halfway through my course and I think it has also helped to keep my skin clear. My eyes are still dry sometimes before I fall asleep, but it isn't horrible. Either way I am willing to put up with it in order to have my acne gone. Please please let me know if you have any questions. This can change your life!

Pros:

90% of People taking this treatment will never get symptoms of acne again.
The most effective medicine for acne i've tried.

Cons:

Dry Lips, Dry Skin.
Got some muscle aches at the start but not so much now.
Had to curb alcohol intake.

Very effective results. I have much clearer skin and see this continuing to be the case. I can see that some people complained about this stuff a lot but If you have a bombsite of a back like mine did due to acne then this medicine is a godsend. Feel much more confident and there isn't as much pain.

Pros:

mainly clear skin

Cons:

SEVERE and major depression which has remained for the 10 years since I took roaccutane
have to remain on the *pill*-Diane/Juliette to keep my skin clear after course of roaccutane

Yes, my skin is mainly clear now but my life has been ruined by the depression caused by taking roaccutane. I also developed anorexia nervosa and can no longer work as a physiotherapist. Be VERY careful with this drug, that's all I can say...

Pros:

Acne gone totally

Cons:

All the side effects under the sun, had to stop after 10 weeks. Started on 40mg daily for a month then upped to 80mg dails

HOWEVER!! I look back at photos a year ago and could scream that I didn't go for it before. I have a very low body fat percentage and I think the dose was too high for me despite being correct for my weight. So if you are very sporty it's worth keepin to the lowed end of the dose scale. I have scarring but clear skin. Was terrified to go on this but heartily wish had done it sooner.

Pros:

*clears up active acne
* dries up oil
* hair doesn't get oily EVER

Cons:

*eyelashes/eyebrows falling out
* the usual stuff: VERY dry skin, & lips
* makes me jittery; hard for me to sit still
* very dry eyes - irritated, and inflammed

i broke out in acne eight months ago when i was on some sort of antibotics. It flared into a hellish nightmare and i took many sorts of things to get rid off it = antibotics, tretinion, differin, clendymicine, tazorac and alas nothing worked. Two and half months ago my dermo told me that the only thing that would work for me is accutane. As of now, i've been on it for 75 days, and i don't have one pimple on my face. However i still have scars, and red marks left over. About a couple of weeks ago i've noticed that a lot of my eyelashes are falling out - 9 per day! and my eyes are itchy and inflammed due to the accutane. i aslo have a hard time concentrating on certain things: i could sit and read for hours at a time but now it's near impossible for me to do that! bottom line = if you tried everything to help clear up your acne, definitely use accutane, since it does the job. Yeah there are side affects, but there's side affects to every drug and if your face really puts you down emotionally and physcologically then seriously give the 'tane a try.

Pros:

-First Clear Skin in 2 Years
-Confidence
-Happiness

Cons:

-Quite emotionally draining
-Dry Lips
-Eczema
-Scared about other side effects
-Initial breakout

After suffering with bad acne for over 2 years of antibiotics, creams and home remedies, the emotional effects of acne began to take their toll. At first I was very afraid of the side effects (especially hairloss), but after 6 months of Accutane I experienced none of these "scare stories". The hair loss is extremely scary for those who suffer it- but honestly you would be shocked how many hairs you lose daily anyway- and sadly i think many people stop despite purely normal hair shedding. I very nearly did, and 6 months down the line am SO glad I carried on. You cannot put a price on clear skin- i say if your acne is bothering you- don't let anyone stop you from sorting it out. There are side-effects, but all of these are nothing compared to the side effects of acne.

Pros:

Clears skin (at least temporarily), reduced my oiliness for good

Cons:

I started breaking out bad again a year and a half after going off it, bad initial breakout, bad side effects

After trying many things that didn't work, I finally decided to do this my senior year of high school. I started over winter break which was good because I broke out HORRIBLY at first---cystic acne all over my jaw and forehead. My skin started getting nice at about 3 months. By the end of my 6 month round, my skin was flawless and glowing, and my formerly oily skin was actually pretty dry (a welcome change). My perfect skin lasted until halfway through my sophomore year of college. Now entering my junior year, my skin is almost as bad as it was before. I have tons of clogged pores and I'm starting to get cystic acne again. My side effects were mood swings, very dry skin and lips, depression (although I have a family history of it), and joint pain. I can't decide if I should go on a 2nd round of this because my side effects were so bad. I do recommend this because anyone with severe acne knows how it makes you less confident but be aware of the potential risks. It's up to you to decide if the clear skin is worth it.

Pros:

Clears Skin well
Easy to use

Cons:

Dry Skin/Lips
Red Face

I had been on a couple of different antibiotics for around three years and I never had any improvement. I was obviously self-conscious of my acne, but the main problem I had with it was very comfortable, especially when I had large spots of my back. Bumping into something on my shoulder would have been incredibly painful for me. I went on a five month course of Accutane, and I had no improvement until around three months in. My skin is now completely clear of acne (as of three months after stopping). My face looks very good, and while my back has quite bad scarring, it still looks a lot better than before. The Dry skin and lips were a chore to maintain - I had to moisturise my face every morning and I used a combination of Vaseline and Carmex for my lips. I also put Vaseline up my nose as recommended by my Dermatologist (disgusting, I know) to prevent nosebleeds. The side effects were not as bad as I expected after researching the drug, but of course it varies from person to person. I would definitely recommend trying it. Make sure you get a good moisturiser - the first one I used was fine until around half way through, when it only lasted a couple of hours. I used E45 lotion. I also found that Carmex was good for healing dry lips (eg. in the morning when you wake up) and Vaseline was useful throughout the day to maintain my lips. If you exercise a lot, you will experience aching muscles. I cut back on swimming, but when ever I did my muscles were aching after only one or two lengths, but as I kept going weren't as bad. Clearly, the side effects are annoying but in my opinion they are completely worth it. If my acne does come back in the future, I would go back on Accutane.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
